The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have announced twenty films as their short for the Best Visual Effects category. Of the twenty, six of them are of the Marvel and DC universe. A few, like “Dunkirk” and “The Shape Of Water are the big Oscar contenders in other categories so they could easily make the final cut.
- “Alien: Covenant”
- “Beauty and the Beast”
- “Blade Runner 2049
- “Dunkirk”
- “Ghost in the Shell”
- “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2”
- “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle”
- “Justice League”
- “Kong: Skull Island”
- “Life”
- “Logan”
- “Okja”
- “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales”
- “The Shape of Water”
- “Spider-Man Homecoming”
- “Star Wars: The Last Jedi”
- “Thor: Ragnarok”
- “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets”
- “War for the Planet of the Apes”
- “Wonder Woman”
Having not actually seen some of these, if I were to pick right now as to which five I thought would get nominations they would be:
NOMINATION PREDICTIONS
- “Dunkirk” (still think this will be a huge front-runner at the Oscars, especially in the technically categories)
- “Wonder Woman” (I believe the hype is so big on this movie this year that it will grab some unexpected nominations)
- “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” (some of the visuals in the trailer alone look amazing)
- “Blade Runner 2049” (unless they decide to completely shut out this movie, it should at least land some technical nominations)
- “The Shape Of Water” (this is another movie I still believe will be a big player overall)
If anything’s going to knock one of those films out, it’s likely “War For The Planet Of The Apes.”
