There were 77 eligible shorts this year, but the Academy’s Documentary Branch has narrowed the Documentary Shorts category down to ten, with five of which eventually going on to earn Oscar nominations.

  • “Alone” – The New York Times
  • “Edith+Eddie” – Heart is Red and Kartemquin Films
  • “Heaven Is a Traffic Jam on the 405″ – Stiefel & Co.
  • “Heroin(e)” – A Netflix Original Documentary in association with The Center for Investigative Reporting, A Requisite Media Production
  • “Kayayo – The Living Shopping Baskets” – Integral Film
  • “Knife Skills” – TFL Films
  • “116 Cameras” – Birdling Films
  • “Ram Dass, Going Home” – Further Pictures
  • “Ten Meter Tower” – Plattform Produktion
  • “Traffic Stop” – Q-Ball Productions

NOMINATION PREDICTIONS

  1. Heroin(e)” (because Netflix usually gets a short on the board)
  2. “Heaven Is a Traffic Jam on the 405″ (because most of the Academy lives in L.A. and will likely tune in for this one because it’s about the area)
  3. “116 Cameras” (it’s about using technology to immortalize Holocaust survivors in 3D digital projections… it better get nominated)
  4. “Kayayo – The Living Shopping Baskets”
  5. “Traffic Stop”
