This year’s Best Original Song shortlist features everything from pop artists like Sara Bareilles, Josh Groban, and Taylor Swift & ZAYN to country artists like Brad Paisley, Faith Hill, and Tim McGraw. You’ve got pop bands like Bastille and OneRepublic while legends Stevie Nicks, Pat Benatar, and even Cher have new original music featured on soundtracks. “Weird Al” Yankovic provided the theme to “Captain Underpants” while Sufjan Stevens provided two songs that under consideration. Jason Mraz, Mariah Carey, and Nick Jonas are in the mix with The Roots, Pharrell Williams, and Elvis Costello. Some actors and actresses provide their singing skills as well with soundtracks featuring Emma Watson, Zoe Lister-Jones, Adam Pally, Fred Armisen, Kristen Bell, Adam Sandler, Dustin Hoffman, Ben Stiller, Elizabeth Marvel, Mary J. Blige, and Michelle Pfeiffer. Even Academy favorite Ryan Bingham has another new release as does the late Chris Cornell. As with any year in the odd Best Original Song department, it is anyone’s guess what will get nominated. But for now, I’ll likely just go with this year’s word-of-mouth and what I know the Academy has nominated before.
