Here are your final seven competitors for Best Makeup and Hairstyling in a feature. Netflix’s “Bright” pops in here so either the Academy is starting to move toward not minding the streaming service or it just happened to make the final cut. Oddly missing are “Beauty and the Beast” and more surprisingly, “The Shape Of Water,” with its sea creature looking very much a big part of its story and very well down by Guillermo del Toro and his team.
- “Bright”
- “Darkest Hour”
- “Ghost in the Shell”
- “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2”
- “I, Tonya”
- “Victoria & Abdul”
- “Wonder”
With the Academy having yet to show their cards this year about how they feel towards the Netflix streaming service, I would ultimately count “Bright” out of the equation. I’m also super surprised to see “Ghost in the Shell” still in the contention for anything after its dismal performance at the box office and with critics. On personal taste and not really wanting to see them, I would ultimately eliminate “Victoria & Abdul” and “Wonder” as well. That leaves “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” which isn’t stretch seeing as the first film also got a Best Makeup and Hairstyling nomination, “I, Tonya,” which “sort of” transformed Margot Robbie into the figure skater Tonya Harding, and the only film from my original list to make the cut, “Darkest Hour,” which turned to the prolific actor Gary Oldman into one of the most iconic English prime ministers of all-time, Winston Churchill, to which I believe he will win the Academy Award. To that end, it would be very fitting for the film to win the Best Makeup and Hairstyling category as well, but time will tell on that prediction.
