Stream Guide: Wind River & The Square (March 2nd, 2018)

WIND RIVER on NETFLIX

Taking a break from their roles in the Marvel Universe, Elizabeth Olsen and Jeremy Renner star in Taylor Sheridan’s big directing breakthrough film “Wind River,” which he also pens. Known for his Academy Award nominated screenplay for “Hell Or High Water,” Sheridan was originally an actor that crossed over into the world of writing and directing. The film follows Olsen, a young FBI agent, investigating the murder of an 18-year-old woman on an American Indian reservation. With Renner as a guide who knows the land, the two find themselves in a dangerous position at the heart of this mystery.

“Forgetting Sarah Marshall” is one of my favorite comedies of all-time. It’s a break-up film starring Jason Segel and Kristen Bell, as they end up on the same vacation in which Segel is alone and Bell is with her new eccentric, superstar boyfriend. Mila Kunis and Russell Brand, along with a slew of cameos including Jonah Hill and Paul Rudd, also star. In another comedy on the list, Simon Pegg stars as a journalist surrounded by talent the likes of Kirsten Dunst, Megan Fox, Gillian Anderson, and Jeff Bridges in “How To Lose Friends and Alienate People.” Fresh off his Academy Award nomination for “Phantom Thread,” director Paul Thomas Anderson has a few other films available to stream this week. “There Will Be Blood,” which also stars Daniel Day-Lewis didn’t make the list this week, but the Adam Sandler dark comedy “Punch-Drunk Love” did. Another Kirsten Dunst comedy lands on the list as well titled “Get Over It,”loosely based on William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” also starring Ben Foster, Mila Kunis, Shane West, Martin Short, and Colin Hanks. Taking a more serious tone is M. Night Shymalan’s “Unbreakable,” which sees Bruce Willis discovering that he has super powers after surviving a train crash and being stalked by Samuel L. Jackson. This film was later tied to Shymalan’s more recent film “Split” and will now be getting a sequel titled “Glass.”

Clint Eastwood’s daughter Francesca Eastwood stars in the revenge flick “M.F.A.,” which is quite timely with the “Me Too” movement, as she stars as a college student who accidentally kills her rapist and goes on a killing spree, seeking revenge for men who harm innocent women. One of my favorite films of all-time is “Cruel Intentions,” which sees Ryan Phillippe playing a playboy who makes a bet with his step-sister, played by Sarah Michelle Gellar, that he can get innocent Reese Witherspoon, who has publicly announced her plans to stay chaste, to sleep with him. You may remember Cara Delivingne from “Suicide Squad” and “Paper Towns,” but now sci-fi director Luc Besson has gotten a hold of her and placed her next to Dane DeHaan in his original sci-fi concept “Valerian and the City Of Thousand Planets.” Nominated for Best Foreign Language Feature at this year’s 90th Academy Awards, “The Square” stars Dominic West and Elisabeth Moss in a film that comes out of Sweden.
