Doug Liman’s “Jumper” is actually one of my favorite films. Yes, I know I’m in the very small minority, but I love the concepts behind that film as well as the unrelenting pacing that never lets up. To be fair, I was a fan of the books before they became a movie. The series tells the story of different people that find out that they have the ability to teleport on command.

The trailer for the series based on “Impulse” looks very different from the story told in the actual book. The trailer shows young Henrietta, a 16-year-old girl who finds out she is a “jumper.” Reading the synopsis, you find out that she discovers this power in her boyfriend’s truck when he tries to rape her. Her jumping “inadvertently crushes him, leaving him a paraplegic,” which is a very interesting concept, with the emotional aftermath of that being well worth some exploration. With a mostly no name cast, the fact that Doug Liman is back onboard as director and executive producer, along with the visual effects looking similar to that of the feature film, “Jumper,” I am onboard. The only thing holding me back is the fact that it’s only available through YouTube Red. In the current world of subscription based entertainment, the last thing I need is yet another subscription. Here’s to hoping this shows up somewhere that I can actually watch it.

Synopsis: “Impulse” follows “16-year-old Henrietta, aka Henry, who discovers she has the ability to teleport. The first time she realizes this, she is in a truck with her high school’s Golden Boy, who tries to rape her. She has a seizure and teleports, in the course of which she inadvertently crushes him, leaving him a paraplegic.” The show goes on to “explore Henry’s need to reconcile what her assaulter tried to do with the consequence, and her feelings about discovering she can teleport with her feelings about the assault.”
