PACIFIC RIM: UPRISING || After director (now Academy Award winning director) Guillermo del Toro released the original “Pacific Rim” back in 2013, it did not seem like anyone was clamoring for another one. Yet here we are and here is “Pacific Rim: Uprising,” a monster/robot film that looks completely sterile. John Boyega turns his “Star Wars” fame into a vehicle for leading this big budget action film with the cast that also includes Scott Eastwood and the return of Charlie Day, who appears to be the only returning cast member. They couldn’t get Ron Perlman? This is Steven S. DeKnight’s feature film directorial debut.
SHERLOCK GNOMES || Speaking of sequels we don’t need, if you happen to remember the 2011 animated film “Gnomeo and Juliet,” someone believed we needed a follow up on that film, this one instead following a new character, voiced by Johnny Depp, of the legendary detective Sherlock Holmes but with the terrible play on his name: Sherlock Gnomes, as he looks for all the missing garden gnomes. James McAvoy, Emily Blunt, Maggie Smith, and Michael Caine all return to lend their voices to the sequel while Chiwetel Ejiofor and Mary J. Blige join the cast. I’d much rather be seeing “Isle Of Dogs” this weekend, but my daughters have already pegged to see this one.
