WESTWORLD: SEASON TWO
Get ready for some shit. Much like the premise of “Jurassic Park,” the monsters are loose in the park and they are out for blood in “Westworld: Season Two.” Led by Dolores Abernathy (Evan Rachel Wood) and Teddy Flood (James Marsden), the A.I. look to have taken over all the different parks, as we see Maeve Millay (Thandie Newton) walking through an Asian setting with samurai all around. “Did you ever stop to think about your actions… the price you’d have to pay if their were a reckoning?” Dolores asks someone they have captive, which tells you all you need to know about the A.I. in that they are fully conscious now, with their own thoughts and reasoning. They are asking questions. Even Teddy mentions “we’ve ridden ten miles and all we’ve seen is blood… is this really what you want?” suggesting even further that they know the weight of what is happening. But as shown with Maeve, the true weight of the concept is still being fleshed out and explored, as she asks to see her daughter and is given the explanation that she was just something that was programmed in a lab.
Bernard Lowe (Jeffrey Wright) is back but he seems to be on both sides, seen talking to Dolores about dreams but also being seen alongside Charlotte Hale (Tessa Thompson) and Ashley Stubbs (Luke Hemsworth) as they seem to be working alongside the military in what is likely containment. And Ed Harris’ Man In Black has returned as well, stating very bluntly in the trailer: “I gonna burn this whole thing to the ground.” The second season also looks to continue the flashback thread, with Jimmi Simpson’s William being glimpsed at. Also, the “hosts” look to enter the real world at some point, with a very contemporary looking Dolores standing on a balcony at one point. Whether that’s part of a flashback or whether the “hosts” escape is yet to me seen. It also appears that fellow hosts Clementine Pennyfeather (Angela Sarafyan), Hector Escaton (Rodrigo Santoro), and the welcoming host Angela (Talulah Riley) are all returning as well, with small glimpses of each.
The highlight of the trailer is the piano rendition of Nirvana’s “Heart-Shaped Box” which is somber and chill-educing, adding a full orchestra by the end of the song. The beauty of the song really takes over during a little montage of moments and that is echoed by a statement made by Dolores early one: “Here we are, kind that will never know death. And yet we’re fighting to live. There is beauty in what we are.” Just like the destruction in “Jurassic Park” when the dinosaurs got loose and started fighting back, get ready for the same bloody nature with this, which is fitting as both of these are based off of Michael Crichton’s work.
