WARRIOR on PRIME VIDEO
Back in 2012, the film “Warrior” seemed like an unheard of hit. The film was released in 2011, but I ended up watching it for the Oscars Challenge, as it was nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role with Nick Nolte garnering the nod. However, the film as a whole ended up being one of my favorite films of the Challenge and remains on my radar as such ever since. Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton play rival brothers mixed martial arts and eventually they end up facing one another. The passion behind their performances rivals any film of its kind. The film that immediately comes to mind is David O. Russell’s “The Fighter” starring Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale, and even though “Warrior” did not quite live up to the hype that was that film, it is still an amazing film in its own right.
Liam Neeson takes a break from his thriller work like “Taken” and “The Commuter” to play a historical figure in “Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down The White House.” Neeson plays the infamous “Deep Throat,” who was leaking information to the press to help uncover Watergate in 1974. An amazing companion piece to this film is also available. Starring Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman, “All The President’s Men” follows two reporters working for the Washington Post who worked with “Deep Throat” to uncover what was happening in the White House at the time. Now, if only Steven Spielberg’s “The Post” was available this week as well, you’d have yourself a Watergate trilogy.
The documentary “Faces Places” was a huge contender at the 90th Academy Awards this past year. Although it was the odds-on favorite to win, having won across the board prior to its Oscars nomination, it failed to grasp the gold, losing to Netflix’s “Icarus.” Following the artist known as JR and the French New Wave director Agnes Varda, the unlikely pair set out to make art on the French countryside, fusing their unique styles and life experiences together. Another film that missed out at the Oscars this year was the foreign film “In The Fade,” starring Diane Kruger. Winning the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film as well as some critics’ awards along the way, but when the 90th Academy Award nominations were announced, “In The Fade” was nowhere to be seen.
Around 2009, actress Juno Temple landed on my radar as a young actress to watch. She had supporting roles in “Year One” and “Cracks” that I gravitated towards, but it was the 2010 drama “Dirty Girl,” which is now available for streaming, that she finally took a leading role and knocked it out of the park. Her roles since then have only gotten better. An actress that almost everyone gravitates towards is the late Marilyn Monroe, and no other performance quite matches that of hers in “Some Like It Hot,” which was arguably her most recognizable roles.
The other films on the list this week include the latest LEGO movie titled “The LEGO Ninjago Movie,” Noah Baumbach’s “Greenberg,” starring Ben Stiller and Greta Gerwig, and “In The Mix,” starring Usher Raymond, Emmanuelle Chriqui, and Kevin Hart.
