Despite “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” being the odds-on favorite to win the weekend, Denzel Washington fans showed up and gave he and his first-ever sequel, “The Equalizer 2,” the crown with $36 million. “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” was less than two million short with $34.9 million. Last week’s winner, “Hotel Transylvania 2” dropped to Number 3 with $23.7 million, while the superhero fare rounded out the Top Five, “Ant-Man and the Wasp” making $16.5 million and “Incredibles 2” making $11.8 million. This is only the second time ever that the top five films were all sequels. The first time was just two weeks ago, when “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” “Incredibles 2,” “The First Purge,” and “Sicario: Day Of The Soldado” filled the Top Five.
Newcomer “Unfriended: Dark Web” opened to $3.6 million, landing at Number 9, while Liongate’s “Blindspotting” found its way onto the Top 25, at Number 21. Bo Burnham’s “Eighth Grade” jumped five spots to Number 17, making it enough to land the per theater average win for the weekend, with an average of $24,975 for only 33 theaters. Third place in that department was “Blindspotting,” with only a few hundred less, with an average of $24,024 per 14 theaters. “Don’t Worry He Won’t Get Far on Foot” founds it way into the Top 25 in its second weekend, adding 58 theaters and jumping +219.8%, making it the percentage winner within in the list this weekend, while the jump from “Eighth Grade” was a +212.4% bump. After only two weeks, the “Whitney” documentary fell off the list, with a -77.3% decrease. “Superfly” fell off as well, with a -74.8% drop. “Book Club,” “Adrift,” and “RBG” all fell outside too, with the latter lasting four months.
Next week, “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” will reign king, aiming for a $65 million opening while animated fare “Teen Titans Go! To The Movies” aims for a spot in the Top Ten, looking for $15.5 million, which could see it beating fellow animated film “Hotel Transylvania 3,” landing it somewhere near Number 3. With plenty of box office money going to that, expect “Incredibles 2” to possibly take a dip as well. “Hereditary” could have worn out its welcome in the Top 25, looking to likely fall off the list next week, as is “Sanju,” which was lucky to hang on this week.
