ALPHA || If you’ve ever wondered how the first dog was domesticated, director Albert Hughes (“The Book Of Eli”) looks to show you in the YA adventure film “Alpha” set 20,000 years ago. Kodi Smit-McPhee (“Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes”) plays Keda, a boy that after getting separated from his group of hunters, nurses a wolf back to health to gain a friend for his journey back home. The landscapes and CGI work well for the film, touting that IMAX experience, but with a film that’s been riddled with problems and set-backs, not to mention a recent ban by PETA for the murder of five bison for use in the film, it’s a film that I wonder who its made for, as its a PG-13 film made for kids? Many critics, however, are calling it the “biggest surprise of the summer,” which baffles me.
MILE 22 || Director Peter Berg and actor Mark Wahlberg (“Lone Survivor” and “Patriots Day”) abandon their based on a true story fodder for your standard action fare, as Wahlberg leads a group of off-the-radar operatives on a mission to deliver an asset to a mile marker as the villain attacks them around every corner. Think “16 Blocks” meets “Mission: Impossible.” Lauren Cohan uses this to try and launch herself out of the world of “The Walking Dead” following in the footsteps of all the actors that became stars on that show. Ronda Rousey uses this to continue to try and leave the mixed martial arts life to launch her acting career. And Iko Uwais uses this to continue to try and launch his American acting career. All of them could do better.
