The Warner Bros. dynasty hangs on to the crown, as $26.5 million was enough for “Crazy Rich Asians” to overcome last week’s king “The Meg,” which had a second weekend of $21.1 million. The new Peter Berg/Mark Wahlberg feature “Mile 22,” which was set to launch a series of films actually overpowered “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” in its fourth weekend, but $13.7 million for “Mile 22” is likely not enough to continue the series. Studio 8’s new release “Alpha” opened at Number Five to $10.3 million. Outside the Top 25, new release “The Wife” was the per theater average winner with an average of $27,071 per four theaters while you have to travel down to the sixth spot to find a winner within the Top 25, with “Crazy Rich Asians” pulling in an average of $7,834 in 3,384 theaters.
“Puzzle” had the biggest rise within the Top 25, with an increase of +32.1% which was enough to put it at Number 25, pushing out the likes of “The First Purge,” “Blindspotting,” “The Island,” and “Ocean’s 8.” Fox’s “The Darkest Minds” almost bombed in its third weekend, having one of the biggest decreases with a drop of -88.1%. Do not expect that one to hang around next weekend.
Next weekend, “Crazy Rich Asians” will do battle with “The Happytime Murders,” both looking for weekends around $14 million. “A.X.L.” also opens next weekend, but will be likely finish outside the Top 10.
