A.X.L. || Two weeks ago, audiences received “Dog Days,” an ensemble cast, romantic comedy with multiple dogs at the center of human stories, last week gave us “Alpha,” the fictional story of the first-ever domesticated wolf, and this week, we receive “A.X.L.” the story of a dirt-biker becoming friends with a mechanic dog on the loose from the C.I.A. And that’s exactly what the story is. Think “Transformers,” but instead of alien robots, its a robot manufactured by the government that a normal, everyday teen befriends and protects. This “Iron Giant” trope is done to death and this film should have come out in the ’90s. |  |

THE HAPPYTIME MURDERS || Jim Henson’s son, Brian Henson, finally asks the question, what are muppets like when they’re allowed to be Rated-R. With the film and production company STX already running into some legal trouble with Sesame Street for using the tagline “No Sesame. All Street” and lines in the realm of see what puppets do on the other side of the street, “The Happytime Murders” is much in the ballpark of Seth Rogen’s R-rated animated film “Sausage Party,” where adult themes are weaved into childish visuals. Melissa McCarthy, Joel McHale, Maya Rudolph, and Elizabeth Banks fill out the human roles, with classic puppeteers offering their services for the puppet roles. |  |
