THE NUN || Continuing to expand the “Conjuring” universe, this weekend’s biggest release is Warner Bros. “The Nun,” which dives deep into the mythos of “The Conjuring 2” big bad, the demon Valak. Taissa Farmiga (Vera Farmiga’s sister) stars as a young sister, alongside Demian Bichir, who plays a priest. Not much marketing was given to the film, with only a few teasers and small internet adds, never diving into a full trailer, but that does not seem to have hurt the film, as it is on pace to be the biggest opening in the particular universe yet. Unfortunately the critics are not being kind to the film, saying it’s simply too much of the same and uses jump scares as a crutch, much in the same way the first “Annabelle” spin-off failed to capture anyone’s attention.
PEPPERMINT || Jennifer Garner goes back to her action star roots this weekend, following in the footsteps of other revenge seeking, kick ass women. Her days on the television series “Alias” are fondly remembered, but once you’ve seen any form of “The Punisher,” this certain plot device, in which a person’s family is murdered and the surviving member goes on a vicious killing spree, has been done to death. See “Death Wish” with Charles Bronson, and then this year with Bruce Willis. See “Death Sentence” with Kevin Bacon. See “The Brave One” with Jodie Foster. And the list goes on: “True Grit,” “John Wick,” “Inglourious Basterds,” “Django Unchained,” “Kill Bill,” “Oldboy,” and literally a movie from earlier this year titled “Revenge.” So needlessly to say there’s not much Garner can bring to this role that hasn’t been done tirelessly times before.
