Winning big at the 20th British Independent Film Awards was “The Favourite,” with 10 wins (out of 14 nominations), bringing in Best Picture, Best Directing, Best Leading Actress in Olivia Colman, Best Supporting Actress in Rachel Weisz, Best Casting, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Makeup & Hairstyling, and Best Production Design. One has to believe that winning this haul over seas has to put some attention on the film and should translate into some Oscar nominations. The acting nominations for the ladies along with some of the technical awards like Costume Design, Makeup & Hairstyling, and Production Design almost have to be locks considering how intricate the film is with its period.

“You Were Never Really Here” took the Best Music and Best Sound wins while “Ray & Liz” took home the Best Debut Director and Best Breakthrough Producer. “American Animals,” which was up for 11 awards, won two, Best Debut Screenplay and Best Editing. Jay Cole from “A Prayer Before Dawn” won Best Leading Actor while Alessandro Nivola from “Disobedience” won Best Supporting Actor. “Roma” was crowned Best International Film, which goes to the non-British films. Shut out from wins were “Colette” and “Lean On Pete,” which was up for four awards, “Apostasy,” which was up for six awards, and “Stan & Ollie,” which was up for seven.
