“Sorry To Bother You”

From word-of-mouth alone this year, “Sorry To Bother You” and “Hereditary” are easily the front-runners in this category. However, you cannot count out “We The Animals,” which has five total nominations and clearly has some backing, and “Wildlife,” which has the star power of Jake Gyllenhaal and Carey Mulligan as well as Paul Dano and Zoe Kazan behind the camera.

Boots Riley – “Sorry To Bother You”

Boots Riley and “Sorry To Bother You” land right in the middle of this category, with the strong Oscar favorites “First Reformed” and “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” landing at the top of the pack while “Colette” and “Private Life” are more towards the bottom, with very little of any sort of buzz. Perhaps the Independent Spirit crowd will venture for the much more extraordinary screenplay of “Sorry To Bother You,” which is everything but conventional. But, if I were to go off my pure gut instinct at the current moment, Paul Schrader’s “First Reformed” feels like the odds-on favorite to win this category.
