No surprises at all that “Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker” took the Box Office weekend with $177.3 million. Still, that’s down from both “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($247 million) and “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” ($220 million). Projections said it would hit around $200 million, so it is a slight disappointment, but it should still do just fine holding out through the New Year. The bigger disappoint was “Cats,” which came in at almost half of its projection. Hoping to at least his $12 million on a $95 million production budget, it only earned $6.6 million. And with word of mouth bad on that one, do not expect it to do much better in the coming weeks, especially after being pulled from Universal’s Oscar campaigning.
“Uncut Gems” held on to the POPCORN AWARD, edging out “Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker,” with an average of $48,286 per five theaters. “Bombshell” earned the GOLDEN PERCENTAGE AWARD with a whopping +1,500.8% increase. Also increasing on the LIST was “Parasite,” which took the AWARD last week, “Jojo Rabbit,” and “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.” Showing up on the LIST was “A Hidden Life” in its second weekend and “Abominable” showing back up after falling off for a few weeks after its home video release.”Bombshell” and “A Hidden Life” both earned ROCKETs while “Midway” was one spot away from earning a BOMB. “The Good Liar” fell off the LIST after six weeks while the disappointment that is “Playmobil: The Movie” fell off after only three.
Nothing will be able to touch “Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker” next week, but “Spies In Disguise” will try and cracked the Top Five with $13 million. Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women” will likely end up taking second place, looking for a total of $23 million, which should easily edge it over “Jumanji: The Next Level.” And expect “Uncut Gems” to continue up the LIST, as it looks to make $5 million in its widest release. “Abominable” likely won’t stick around for another week and after its huge descent this weekend, expect “Midway” to fall off completely as well.
