As we get closer to the Academy announcing their nominees for the 92nd Academy Awards, it has grown more apparent that we will soon likely be calling “Alita: Battle Angel” an “Academy Award-nominated” film. The Visual Effects Society nominated it for five different categories, including Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature. It was nominated along with “Avenger: Endgame,” which many have been naming the Oscar front-runner,” as well as “Gemini Man,” “The Lion King,” and “Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker,” all three of which made the Oscars shortlist for Best Visual Effects. In fact, almost all the shortlisted features grabbed nominations from the VFX Society, including “Terminator: Dark Fate,” “Captain Marvel,” and “The Irishman” which all grabbed one nomination. The one film on the shortlist that didn’t grab anything? “Cats.”
