Although “Nomadland” won Chicago Indie Critics’ Best Independent Film, the big news here ended up being Spike Lee breaking Chloé Zhao’s streak for Best Director, winning for his work on “Da 5 Bloods,” which also tied for Best Studio Film with “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Chadwick Boseman took three awards, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, and the Impact Award. Viola Davis took her first Best Actress award of the season, while “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” also won Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Ensemble, Best Costume Design, and Best Makeup.
