Awards season, so far, has been pretty straightforward filled with across the board love for “Nomadland,” “Sound Of Metal,” and “Da 5 Bloods.” The New Mexico Film Critics Association took the first big step away from the consensus thus far, honoring films and performers that had yet to have their names lifted up. Taking Best Picture was David Fincher’s “Mank,” a film that will definitely have strong Oscars prowess. The film also took Best Production Design and Best Cinematography. Although Youn Yuh-jung from “Minari” has been one of the most popular critics choices for Best Supporting Actress as she is here, “Minari” as a whole was honored with Best Ensemble. Mads Mikkelsen (“Another Round”), Vanessa Kirby (“Pieces of a Woman”), and Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Black Messiah”) all got their first critics wins of the season, lifting their names rightfully into Oscar conversations. One name that still rings loud and clear is Chloé Zhao, who won Best Director and Best Editing.
