The 11th annual Hollywood Music in Media Awards honored the best composers, musicians, songwriters, and supervisors of 2020. The Original Score winners in the genre films (Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Horror, Independent, etc.) were fairly easy to pick this year, with “Tenet,” “The Invisible Man,” and “Minari” all landing as the ones I would have picked. However, the winner of the Best Original Score for Feature Film may have surprised. My original prediction was Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ score for “Mank,” but James Newton Howard ended up winning for “News Of The World.” Personally, I think it’s a great pick, as after the conclusion of the film, I immediately sought out the soundtrack for “News Of The World.”

Another soundtrack I sought out after viewing the film was “Promising Young Woman,” which won Best Soundtrack. And yet another soundtrack I purchased last year was that of the video game “Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales,” which won Best Original Score for a Video Game. “Soul” and “The Queen’s Gambit” were also my picks for Best Original Score for an Animated Film and Limited Series.

One award I believe they got wrong was Best Original Song in an Animated film. Personally, I believe “Just Sing” From “Trolls World Tour” to be one of the worst songs of the year in film. Far better was “Rocket to the Moon” from “Over The Moon.” Although most of the songs in that film were severely lacking in quality, “Rocket to the Moon” stood out. One win that shouldn’t have surprised but did was “Seen (Io Si)” From “The Life Ahead,” which included the Academy darling Diane Warren as one of the writers. I’d bet some cash that she and that song will be making a trip to the Oscars this year.
