Film Synopsis
Todd is a hyper-articulate, obsessive-compulsive gay twentysomething whose fear of dying alone leads him to a baffling conclusion: he might not be gay after all. When he meets Rory, a whip-smart struggling actress with her own set of insecurities, the two forge a relationship that’s all talk and no sex. Writer/director/star James Sweeney delivers a razor sharp rom-com that’s equal parts Classical Hollywood and distinctly 21st century, exploring just how elastic our definitions of love and sexuality can get.
Looking at Best First Screenplay
Early on in “Straight Up,” it’s very apparent that James Sweeney has something to say. He not only breaks boundaries, but he also raises exciting questions all involving relationships and sexuality. Sweeney writes captivating social commentaries and fleshes out two of the most realized characters in a long time. Topping it off is witty, fast-talking, back-and-forth banter between many of the characters. Sharp and distinct dialogue sets this rom-com apart.
“Palm Springs” and “The Assistant” seem like the more high-profile films in the Best First Screenplay category. Anything competing with those films is in for an uphill battle. But “Straight Up” has something special, and I would not be surprised to see an upset here. Regardless, Sweeney has created something special here. With his unique writing voice, skills as an actor, and director/producer, I hope we see more of what he has to create.
