The Screen Actors Guild announced the nominees for their yearly awards, confirming certain Oscar hopefuls while ruffling some feathers with snubs and omissions. The biggest surprise has to be Kristen Stewart for her performance as Princess Diana in “Spencer,” who has been the critical darling all Oscar season. Another surprise when comparing to the critics is “The Power of the Dog” missing Best Ensemble, despite garnering nominations for Benedict Cumberbatch, Kodi Smit-McPhee, and Kirsten Dunst. The Ensemble nomination is often a huge precursor to a film winning Best Picture at the Oscars, but “Nomadland” missed out on it last year and still went on to win the Academy Award.

“CODA” made some history, being the first film with a a predominantly Deaf cast earning an Ensemble nomination while “Squid Game”became the first Korean language series to grab nominations. My “far too early predictions” would have Ariana DeBose (“West Side Story”) winning Supporting Actress, Kodi Smit-McPhee (“The Power of the Dog”) winning Supporting Actor, Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”) winning Leading Actress, and Benedict Cumberbatch (“The Power of the Dog”) winning Leading Actor. The Ensemble is too hard for me to predict, but I would narrow it down to either “Belfast,” “CODA,” or “King Richard.”
