The 2022 Sundance Film Festival Award winners were announced today. What you’ll notice is that the Audience Award winners were all different from the Grand Jury Prize winners. The Grand Jury Prize winners included “Nanny” for the U.S. Dramatic Competition and “The Exiles” for the U.S. Documentary Competition, plus “Utama” for the World Cinema Dramatic Competition and “All That Breathes” for the World Cinema Documentary Competition. The Audience Awards aligned more with my favorites of the festival including “Navalny” not only winning for the U.S. Documentary Competition but also the Festival Favorite. The much buzzed about “Cha Cha Real Smooth,” which was purchased by Apple, won for the U.S. Dramatic Competition while “Girl Picture” won for the World Cinema Dramatic Competition and “The Territory” won for the World Cinema Documentary Competition.
