Cooley High (#1165)
Chicago, 1964: it’s the end of high school for aspiring poet Preach and his best friend, Cochise, and they have a full slate of extracurricular activities: swinging dance parties, late-night joyrides, and the stumbling pursuit of romance. Of course, when you’re a young Black man in America, there’s no guarantee that your coming-of-age story will be free of complications. Director Michael Schultz and screenwriter Eric Monte—who drew on his own experiences growing up in Chicago’s Cabrini-Green housing project—arrived at something truly unique in 1970s cinema with Cooley High: an endearingly funny, tender, and authentic portrait of Black teens striving toward a brighter future, brought to life by a dynamic ensemble cast and set to a heavenly hit parade of Motown classics.

Three Films by Mai Zetterling (#1162)
A fearlessly transgressive, long-overlooked pioneer of feminist cinema, the Swedish actor turned director Mai Zetterling ruffled the feathers of the patriarchal establishment with a string of bracingly modern, sexually frank, and politically incendiary films focused on female agency and the turbulent state of twentieth-century Europe. Her ability to render subjective psychological states with startling immediacy is on display in these three taboo-shattering works from the 1960s, featuring some of Swedish cinema’s most iconic stars. With their audacious narrative structures, their elaborate use of symbolism, and their willingness to delve into the most fraught realms of human experience, these are models of adventurous, passionately engaged filmmaking.

The Velvet Underground (#1164)
Emerging from the primordial soup of glamour, gutter sleaze, and feverish creativity that was New York’s 1960s underground culture, the Velvet Underground redefined music with its at once raw and exalted blend of experimentation and art-damaged rock and roll. In his kaleidoscopic documentary The Velvet Underground, Todd Haynes vividly evokes the band’s incandescent world: the creative origins of the twin visionaries Lou Reed and John Cale, Andy Warhol’s fabled Factory, and the explosive tension between pop and the avant-garde that propelled the group and ultimately consumed it. Never-before-seen performances, interviews, rare recordings, and mind-blowing transmissions from the era’s experimental cinema scene come together in an ecstatic swirl of sound and image that is to the traditional music documentary what the Velvets were to rock: utterly revolutionary.

Silent Running
In 1968, visual effects pioneer Douglas Trumbull (The Andromeda Strain, Close Encounters of the Third Kind) contributed to the ground-breaking special photographic effects of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. Four years later, he stamped his own indelible mark on the science fiction genre with his mesmerising directorial debut – Silent Running.
In the not-so-distant future, Earth is barren of all flora and fauna, with what remains of the planet’s former ecosystems preserved aboard a fleet of greenhouses orbiting in space. When the crews are ordered to destroy the remaining specimens, one botanist, Freeman Lowell (Bruce Dern, The ‘Burbs), rebels and flees towards Saturn in a desperate bid to preserve his own little piece of Earth that was, accompanied only by the ship’s three service robots.
Featuring a captivating central performance by Dern, visual effects that rival anything in 2001 and a powerful ecological message, Silent Running is a haunting and prescient sci-fi classic that resonates even more strongly today than it did at the time of its original release.

2022 World Series Champions: Houston Astros
Welcome to Space City, home of the Houston Astros™ – your 2022 World Series champions™! The Astros defeated the Philadelphia Phillies™ in six games after winning 106 regular season games and sweeping through their first two rounds of Postseason™ play.
Perennial Fall Classic™ contenders, the Astros looked to breakthrough in 2022 after narrowly missing a championship in 2021. The first move was to bring back legendary Manager Dusty Baker, who perfectly understood how to mix incredible instincts and experience with the Astros undeniably successful analytical approach.
Then came bolstering the roster. Justin Verlander dominated in his return to an already stellar rotation after missing most of the previous two seasons with an injury, and their rookie shortstop Jeremy Peña flashed brilliance during his inaugural campaign. These key returns and additions propelled the rock-solid foundation of Jose Altuve, Yordan Alvarez, Alex Bregman, Ryan Pressly, Kyle Tucker, and Framber Valdez.
The Astros would deliver one of the finest seasons in MLB® history, then methodically dismantle the Seattle Mariners™ in the ALDS™ and the New York Yankees™ in the ALCS.™ An immaculate 7-0 run to start the Postseason set up a showdown with the red-hot, hard-hitting Philadelphia Phillies. Philadelphia would jump out to a 2-games-to-1 lead, but the Astros lifted off behind a stellar bullpen that posted the lowest ERA in Postseason history; the second no-hitter in World Series history; and sensational rockets off the bats of Alvarez, Bregman, Tucker, and Peña, who claimed Willie Mays World Series MVP honors.
With the Game 6 victory at Minute Maid Park,™ the World Series was won in front of a home crowd for the first time since 2013. Baker earned his first World Series ring as manager, and the city of Houston and its Astros fans celebrated with an out-of-this-world parade.

Girl on a Motorcycle
A wildly sexy time capsule from the swinging sixties, The Girl on a Motorcycle stars Alain Delon (The Sicilian Clan) and Marianne Faithfull (Intimacy)—two actors at the height of their impressive cool—as lovers with a taste for the open road. Faithfull stars as Rebecca, a bored housewife who bolts from her home in the French countryside to visit her lover, Daniel (Delon), in Germany. Wearing nothing but a form-fitting black leather suit (the film was re-released in the U.S. as Naked Under Leather), the lusty Rebecca races across the country, and in flashback remembers the start of their affair. She recalls the initial, furtive glances in her father’s bookstore, her elaborate sexual fantasies and their long-awaited consummation. Most important of all is the motorcycle itself, a gift from Daniel that seems to give her more pleasure than any man could deliver.

On The Yard / Walk On The Moon
ON THE YARD
Landing himself in a state penitentiary, Juleson (John Heard), a bookish con artist, fails to adjust to the intricate social order of the prison system. Juleson’s independent way of thinking does little to impress his fellow inmates and runs him afoul of Chilly (Thomas Waites), the leader of one of the most powerful gangs in the prison. Facing a group of cold-blooded killers on his own, Juleson discovers firsthand what individualism can bring to a loner behind bars.
A WALK ON THE MOON
Summer 1969. The Apollo 11 mission brought the first human to set foot on the moon and with it a renewed sense of optimism that anything is possible, while on a farm in upstate New York, Woodstock would become an icon of the power of the counterculture’s influence on America and the world. It’s against this backdrop that the story of an idealistic Peace Corps volunteer named Everett Jones (played by Steppenwolf Theatre Ensemble regular Kevin Anderson) assigned to a remote Colombian village is set. When he arrives, he is confused by the cynical attitude of his predecessor (Terry Kinney, Steppenwolf co-founder) and the apathy the villagers seem to hold toward him. It’s both a tale of hubris and hope, as Jones attempts to bring his version of progress to the rural village. Featuring stunning color cinematography by Adam Greenberg (TERMINATOR, GHOST, NEAR DARK), this feature was produced by director Raphael and Joan Micklin Silver’s daughter Dina and includes an extended cameo by Claudia Silver.
SPECIAL FEATURES
- Original trailer for On the Yard
- Optional English SDH subtitles for both films
