Janet Yang, Riz Ahmed, and Allison Williams all took to the stage this morning to announce the nominees for the 95th Academy Awards. The big takeaways were that the Academy’s love for “Everything Everywhere All At Once” far exceeded our wildest dreams, earning the most nominations of any film with eleven. “All Quiet on the Western Front” and “The Banshees of Inishirin” received nine each, and “Elvis,” “The Fabelmans,” “TÁR,” and “Top Gun: Maverick” were right behind them.
The snubs everyone will be talking about include “The Woman King” not getting a single nomination, despite Viola Davis and the costume work being front-runners for the categories. Park Chan-wook’s “Decision to Leave” missing in the International Feature category seems like a big miss. “The Whale” is missing in the Adapted Screenplay category, “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” is missing in the Original Song and Original Score categories, and Claudio Miranda is missing for his cinematography on “Top Gun: Maverick” all feel like big misses. Some personal snubs include “Nope” not making the cut in the Visual Effects category and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” not getting the Best Picture nomination.
There were plenty of surprises as well. Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu getting nominated for their supporting roles in “Everything Everywhere All At Once” was pleasant. “Everything Everywhere All At Once” got into a few categories that weren’t predicted, like Original Score, Original Song, and Costume Design, and added to the excitement. Judd Hirsch getting a nomination over his co-star Paul Dano will likely have people talking, as well as Ruben Östlund getting a directing nomination and his film “Triangle of Sadness” getting Best Picture and Original Screenplay nominations. The biggest surprise, however, has to be Andrea Riseborough benefiting from the late-round push on her performance in “To Leslie,” which sees her getting the Best Actress nomination.
The 95th Academy Awards will occur on Sunday, March 12, 2023, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Jimmy Kimmel will be the host; hopefully, no one will come on stage and assaults anyone this year.
