Collection: June 2023 Physical Media Recap

And just like that, June 2023 has come and gone, with some fantastic physical media released during the month. Some of the biggest releases of 2022 and 2023 hit shelves, including the highest-grossing movie of the year with “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and one of the highest-grossing movies of all time with “Avatar: The Way of Water.” The “Mario” release saw some exclusives. I grabbed the 4K Steelbook from Best Buy and the limited edition Gift Set exclusive to Walmart, including a giant tin star. For “Avatar: The Way of Water,” I purchased the Best Buy Exclusive 4K Steelbook and the lenticular cover exclusive from Walmart. I also grabbed the 4K release of the original “Avatar,” which came with a white slipcover.

“John Wick: Chapter 4,” one of my favorite films of the year, came out in the second week of June, and not only did I grab the Best Buy Exclusive 4K Steelbook and the Walmart Exclusive Blu-Ray Steelbook, but I also bought the Walmart Exclusive Collector’s Edition. Both Walmart exclusives feature artwork by one of my favorite artists, Alice X. Zhang. I picked up other 2023 releases: “Polite Society” with a Blu-Ray slipcover and Skinamarink with a Walmart Exclusive Steelbook.

Walt Disney continued their 100th-anniversary Steelbooks with “Cars,” “Coco,” and “Toy Story.” Warner Bros. Pictures also continued their 100th-anniversary with “National Lampoon’s Vacation,” for which I grabbed the Best Buy Exclusive Steelbook. We got an incredible Lionsgate Steelbook for “Lord of War” with a clear slipcover. And, Paramount started their “Mission: Impossible” Steelbooks line with the first and second films released ahead of the seventh installment due in theaters later this year. The Second Sight release of “The Changeling” was shipped out with some highlight-of-the-year artwork on the front. The only Shout Factory/Scream Factory purchases I made this month were for “Creepshow” and “Creepshow III,” but with the “Creepshow” release, I grabbed the alternate slipcover, pins, lobby cards, and posters.

My favorite release of the month is the Walmart Exclusive Blu-Ray Steelbook of “John Wick: Chapter 4” because not only is it a Lionsgate Steelbook with a clear slipcover, but Zhang’s art is without compare. The Best Buy version would also make my list of favorites. And, although I did not buy it, the Amazon Exclusive slipcover also has exceptional artwork. “The Changeling” and “Polite Society” releases are also highlights of the month. Once again, the most significant disappointments must be the Disney100 Steelbooks, which are so plain that it’s hard to be excited about them. Add to that the “Super Mario Bros. Movie” Steelbook, which also felt a bit lazy, especially compared to the cool tin that Walmart released.
