Collection: July 2023 Physical Media Recap

Looking back over another month, July offered some incredible releases on physical media. Plenty of 2023 releases hit the shelves this month, including titles like “Beau Is Afraid,” “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,” “Scream VI,” and “Sisu.” I purchased the Walmart Exclusive cover of “Margaret” and the Best Buy Exclusive Steelbook of “Sisu,” which came with a clear slipcover from Lionsgate. “Scream VI” also had a 4K Steelbook option, which I grabbed. A special release was the Glow-In-The-Dark 4K Steelbook of “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey,” which was an international release.

Other Steelbook releases included “Jaws 2” on 4K and the last four “Mission: Impossible” films, which I watched before the latest film, “Dead Reckoning: Part 1,” was released. The animated movie “Resident Evil: Death Island” was released on 4K Steelbook, and there was Walmart Exclusive Blu-Ray Steelbooks of “Deadstream,” which I saw earlier in the year, and the documentary “Hollywood Dreams and Nightmares,” about the life of Robert Englund. A bunch of international Steelbooks also got released, including “The Walking Dead: Season 11,” “Evil Dead Rise,” and “The Last of Us: Season 1.”

Both Criterion and Kino Lorber had sales this month. I purchased a total of nine Criterion titles, including the new releases of “After Hours,” “One False Move,” and the 4K upgrade of “Breathless.” I bought eleven titles for the Kino Lorber sale, with “Barton Fink” and “Kazaam” being two of my favorite pick-ups. Speaking of favorites, one of the best films of the 90s, “The Truman Show,” received a 4K upgrade this month, and “Face/Off” got a Blu-Ray release. I picked up two Oscar Best Picture winners in “The Broadway Melody” and “Cimarron,” released by the Warner Archive Collection, and the Stephen King adaptation, “Needful Things,” which Kino Lorber released a 4K upgrade of.

My favorite release of the month is “The Last Of Us: Season 1,” which was released by Warner Bros internationally. The artwork on the front is some of the best of the year. A close second would be Lionsgate’s release of “Sisu,” because the company continues to release fantastic artwork with their titles, and I am constantly impressed by their creativity. I also enjoyed Arrow’s release of the Martin Scorsese film “Hugo,” which also has phenomenal artwork. My least favorite releases of the month were “Face/Off” or “Team America: World Police.” As much as I love those films, I wish the physical releases had at least come with slipcovers.
