Summer has ended, and August brought us a ton of new physical media. Plenty of 2023 films got released, including “Fast X,” “Asteroid City,” “You Hurt My Feelings,” “The Blackening,” “No Hard Feelings,” and “The Flash,” plus my two favorite films of the year so far, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and “Sanctuary.” Exclusives ran rampant as well, with “Fast X,” “Blackening,” Flash,” and “Guardians 3” all receiving Best Buy Exclusive Steelbooks.
Other Steelbook releases included “2 Guns,” “The Big Lebowski,” “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” “Ender’s Game,” “Battlestar Galactica,” and the Uncut version of “Infinity Pool.” I even double-dipped on “Enter The Dragon,” which had a WB100 anniversary release with a slipcover, plus a Best Buy Exclusive Steelbook, both of which looked amazing. I also purchased two copies of “The Mist” this month, with Walmart Exclusive slipcovers from Lionsgate; one with a Retro Vibe slipcover and one with a monster on the cover as part of their 2023 Halloween line of new horror covers.
Shout Factory was busy this month, delivering some of the best cover art in August. I purchased the alternate slipcover for “Nightbreed,” with art from Devon Whitehead. He also provided the art for all the alternate slipcovers for the Chucky sequels that were released, including “Bride of Chucky,” “Seed of Chucky,” “Curse of Chucky,” and “Cult of Chucky,” which ended up being my favorite releases of the month. They even did a Best Buy Exclusive Steelbook release for their title “Hackers,” starring Angelina Jolie in an early role. Plus, I got their release of Adam Sandler’s “Little Nicky.”
As always, some lesser exciting releases included Disney’s 100 anniversary 4K Steelbooks featuring the plain silver cases. “Beauty and the Beast,” “Cinderella,” and “Frozen” were the highlight titles this month, with a new 4K of “The Nightmare Before Christmas” also getting the same sort of release.
