THE OTHERS (#1195)

Criterion | 2001 | 104 min | Rated PG-13
Directed by Alejandro Amenábar

A remote manor; hushed, candlelit atmosphere; and shivery, supernatural menace. With his first English-language feature, Chilean Spanish writer-director-composer Alejandro Amenábar resurrected the classic gothic chiller to create a ghost story of uncommon emotional resonance. Nicole Kidman stars as a World War II–era mother whose imperiousness masks a terrifying pain, as she keeps her light-sensitive children enshrouded in darkness on her country estate. The arrival of three new servants punctures her insular world—and seems to disturb the balance between the living and the dead. With each stunning twist and turn, Amenábar immerses us more deeply in a realm haunted not only by spirits but also by guilt, trauma, and repression.

Alien Outlaw

(KINO CULT #002)

Kino Lorber | 1985 | 91 min | Not Rated
Directed by Phil Smoot

Aliens have landed! And these aliens hunt…for sport! When a UFO crash lands in the Appalachian back country, it releases a squad of interstellar predators, playing The Most Dangerous Game with any Earthlings who cross their path. But these alien outlaws encounter unexpected resistance in the form of a gun-toting blonde (Kari Anderson) and her mentor (Western legend Lash La Rue).

Phil Smoot’s second creature feature (following The Dark Power) is both a clever send-up of the 1950s rubber-suit monster genre, and a loving homage to the 1940s B Western (with a special appearance by Sunset Carson). Photographed by Paul Hughen (The Book of Boba Fett), Alien Outlaw is presented here in a director-approved 4K restoration from the original camera negatives.

Directed by Danny Cohen

Shot on vivid 16mm film over a three-year period, ANONYMOUS CLUB chronicles notoriously shy, Melbourne-based musician Courtney Barnett’s ups and downs on the world tour for her album Tell Me How You Really Feel. Featuring Barnett’s unguarded narration from her audio diary, recorded on a dictaphone provided by filmmaker Danny Cohen, the film delivers frank and unprecedented insight into Barnett’s creative process, the sacrifices and inner conflicts set in motion by fame, and the sometimes dark backdrop to her whimsical, relatably poetic compositions.

Before Night Falls

Warner Bros. | 2000 | 133 min | Rated R
Directed by Julian Schnabel

One of the most universally acclaimed films of its time upon release, Before Night Falls appeared on over 75 “Ten Best” lists and features Academy Award® nominee Javier Bardem in a “mesmerizing and inspired performance!” (Rex Reed, New York Observer). Julian Schnabel (Basquiat) directed this incredible journey through the life and work of the late Cuban poet Reinaldo Arenas. Victimized by a government that banned his books and jailed him for a crime he did not commit, Reinaldo endured unspeakable persecution in a courageous stand against censorship and oppression. Without a country but not without integrity, he fled to America where he continued to fight for personal expression and produced a stirring body of work. Featuring a dual performance by Johnny Depp, Before Night Falls is a tribute to the liberating power of art….and one man’s undying passion for life.

Black Sabbath

Kino Lorber | 1963 | 92 min | Not Rated

One of the great horror anthology films of all time, and Mario Bava’s personal favorite of his works, Black Sabbath solidified the director’s reputation as Europe’s maestro of the macabre. In The Telephone… a woman is haunted by menacing phone calls from a former lover. The Wurdalak stars Boris Karloff (Frankenstein, The Crimson Cult) as a vampire hunter whose family is stalked by the wandering spirit of an undead ghoul. The Drop of Water involves a nurse who steals a ring from a corpse – not realizing the curse that is carried with it. This is the AIP English language version of the Mario Bava (Black Sunday) horror classic, featuring an international cast that includes Lidia Alfonsi (Life Is Beautiful), Michèle Mercier (Angélique) and Mark Damon (Anzio).

Christopher Strong

Warner Bros. | 1933 | 78 min | Not Rated
Directed by Dorothy Arzner

Katharine Hepburn made her stunning screen debut as John Barrymore’s daughter in 1932’s A Bill of Divorcement. In Christopher Strong, Hepburn’s second film and first star vehicle, the intelligent, liberated and unconventionally beautiful actress chose to play an intelligent, liberated and unconventionally beautiful aviatrix who soars into a torrid affair (with Colin Clive as a fellow aristocrat)…and crashes into unendurable heartbreak. The melodramatic story is as much keen-edged steel as tears, thanks to Hepburn’s gutsy performance and to the taut direction of Dorothy Arzner, classic Hollywood’s only major female director. Among the film’s highlights: Hepburn simply astonishing in silvery lamé heading to a costume ball as the world’s most glamorous moth!

The Dark Power

(KINO CULT #003)

Kino Lorber | 1985 | 87 min | Not Rated
Directed by Phil Smoot

Weekend party plans are derailed when an ancient Toltec curse unleashes an army of zombies upon a houseful of college coeds. But the odds are evened when whip-cracking lawman Ranger Girard (Western legend Lash La Rue) arrives to stage a showdown with the evil dead. The first of two films by North Carolina horror auteur Phil Smoot (Alien Outlaw), The Dark Power manages to be both nostalgic and irreverent as it revisits the creature feature phenomenon. This director-approved 4K restoration of The Dark Power showcases the early work of special effects masters Tony Elwood (Cold Storage) and Emmy Award-Winner Dean Jones (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) as well as, ahem, eye-popping cinematography by Paul Hughen (The Mandalorian).

The Devil Doll

Warner Bros. | 1936 | 78 min | Not Rated
Directed by Tod Browning

Master of the macabre Tod Browning (Freaks) created this spine-tingler about madness, murder and revenge. It stars Oscar-winning screen legend Lionel Barrymore as an escaped convict who uses a mad scientist’s shrinking serum to create tiny people. He then disguises himself as a kindly old lady running a toy store, so he can secretly send his tiny assassins out to exact a terrifying revenge on the men who framed him. Special-effects genius Leonard Smith created the trick photography that Michael Weldon (The Psychotronic Encyclopedia) called “better than (that of) any other shrunken-people movie”. Maureen O’Sullivan co-stars as Barrymore’s innocent daughter and Frank Lawton as her devoted suitor. Rafaela Ottiano adds a note of horror as the maniacal widow of the twisted scientist. Full of menacing moments and hair-raising scenes “certain to return in nightmares” (Pauline Kael), this is truly an unforgettable horror movie classic, now stunningly remastered!

The Iron-Fisted Monk

Arrow | 1977 | 93 min | Not Rated
Directed by Sammo Kam-Bo Hung

In the years following the passing of Bruce Lee, the flame of Hong Kong action cinema was being kept alive via the masterful choreography of Sammo Hung in a multitude of films, typically under the direction of Huang Feng (Hapkido, The Shaolin Plot). However, in 1977, Hung would finally get his chance to fully take the directing reins, with his former director by his side as co-writer, paving the way for The Iron-Fisted Monk!

Rice Miller Luk (Hung) is just a simple man trying to live a quiet life, until one day the Manchu Bannermen bully their way through town, killing his uncle in the process. When a nearby Shaolin monk, San De (Chen Sing, The Shaolin Plot), easily defeats them and sees the fallen Luk, he offers him a chance to learn martial arts at the Shaolin Temple. However, Luk’s impatience with his training sees him return to his town to witness an even more ruthless organization of Manchus, led by a depraved official (Fung Hak-An, Warriors Two) who has a nasty and violent habit of taking whatever (and whoever) he wants. Will Luk’s incomplete Shaolin teachings, combined with the skill set of San De, be enough to put an end to the Manchu stronghold plaguing their people?

Predating The 36th Chamber of Shaolin’s variation of the story of San De and Miller Luk by a year, and notorious for its uncensored version receiving a retroactive Category Iii rating in Hong Kong (the equivalent of the American Nc-17), The Iron-Fisted Monk pulls no punches, literally or figuratively, explosively marking the beginning for one of the greatest martial arts film directors of all time!

Cahn (Curse of the Faceless Man)—and too terrifying to even have a name!—”It” is a seemingly invincible monster that is hell-bent on killing everybody on a mission to Mars. This life-devouring alien brushes aside bullets and even nuclear blasts—making it one very cold-hearted Cold War-style invader. When his crew is brutally murdered on a Mars expedition, Commander Carruthers (Marshall Thompson, First Man into Space) becomes the prime suspect. Taken into custody and facing a court-martial back on Earth, he discovers that the real killer—a grotesque, slithering “It”—has stowed aboard the earthbound ship. Lorna the Exorcist

(KINO CULT #001)

Kino Lorber | 1974 | 100 min | Not Rated
Directed by Jesús Franco

Haunted by erotic visions, a young woman (Lina Romay) comes to discover that her sexual possession is the result of a bargain struck nineteen years earlier between her playboy father (Patrick Mariel) and an ethereal, pansexual seductress (Pamela Stafford). In a parallel narrative, a visionary doctor (Jess Franco) tries to unravel the particular form of psychopathia sexualis that torments a beautiful patient (Catherine Lafferière). In the 1970s, Franco’s films reached a level of voyeuristic extremes, especially when collaborating with Romay, his soulmate and creative muse. Along with Shining Sex and Female Vampire, Lorna the Exorcist (Les possédées du diable) demonstrates the outer limits the erotic horror film: hallucinatory films with languorous love scenes, drenched with lyrical music, and punctuated with moments of stark horror.

Shaw Brothers Presents: Four Films by Chang Cheh

(Five Shaolin Masters / Shaolin Temple / The Five Venoms / Crippled Avengers)

Arrow | 1974-1978 | 4 Movies | 440 min | Not Rated
Directed by Cheh Chang & Wu Ma

By the early-1970s, Chang Cheh was already Shaw Brothers’ most prolific and well-known director with a plethora of box office hits (including the One-Armed Swordsman franchise) to his name and renowned for discovering the hottest young talents to star in his films.

Three of those stars – David Chiang, Ti Lung and Alexander Fu Sheng – all feature in Five Shaolin Masters and Shaolin Temple, two selections from his instant-classic ‘Shaolin Temple Cycle’, based on the real-life tales of fighters training to face off against the ruthless Qing armies taking over China. A few years later, Chang outdid himself with the formation of the all-powerful posse of kung fu experts known to fans as the Venom Mob, whose talents would be showcased most famously in The Five Venoms and Crippled Avengers.

Blood-soaked, brutal, and a marked influence on the ‘heroic bloodshed’ films by Chang’s sometime assistant director John Woo, these four films show one of Shaw’s greatest directors working at the height of his talents.

Shaw Brothers Presents: Four Films by Lau Kar-Leung

(Challenge of the Masters / Executioners from Shaolin / Heroes of the East / Dirty Ho)

Arrow | 1976-1979 | 4 Movies | 405 min | Not Rated
Directed by Chia-Liang Liu

After masterminding the spellbinding martial arts choreography on dozens of Shaw Brothers’ biggest hits, Lau Kar-Leung became an extraordinary director in his own right, using his inimitable talents and deeply-felt understanding of kung fu history to create his own idiosyncratic and often humorous take on the genre.

Lau’s second film, the thrilling and deeply personal Challenge of the Masters, draws upon the legend of the real-life Cantonese folk hero Wong Fei-hung, played here by Lau’s soon-to-be-legendary adoptive brother Gordon Liu in his first starring role. Having choreographed the action for many of Chang Cheh’s ‘Shaolin Temple’ films, Lau took on the same historical legends in Executioners from Shaolin, jam-packed with extraordinary fight scenes and unforgettable characters, not least the evil Bai Mei, the White-Browed Hermit!

Lau’s trademark mix of high-kicking kung fu choreography and knee-slapping physical comedy is on full display in one of the director’s most acclaimed films, Heroes of the East, which pits Japanese and Chinese martial arts against one another and ultimately celebrates both. Last but not least is Dirty Ho, Lau’s take on the odd couple buddy comedy, which shows off some of the most inventive action set-pieces in the Shaw Brothers canon and is not to be missed!

Shaw Brothers Presents: The Basher Box

(King Boxer / The Boxer from Shantung / Chinatown Kid)

Arrow | 1972-1977 | 3 Movies | 351 min | Not Rated
Directed by Cheh Chang, Jeong Chang-hwa, & Hsueh-Li Pao

At the dawn of the 1970s, a new kind of hard-hitting action film swept the Asian film industry: the kung fu movie, often known to Western audiences as ‘bashers’ for their emphasis on hand-to-hand combat. Shaw Brothers was one of the greatest producers of these eye-popping action spectaculars, revolutionizing the genre through the back-breaking work of top-shelf talent on both sides of the camera as well as unbeatable widescreen production value, much of it shot at ‘Movietown’, their huge, privately-owned studio on the outskirts of Hong Kong.

This triple bill of redemption and revenge kicks off in 1972 with Korean director Chung Chang-wha’s King Boxer, the film that established kung fu cinema as an international box office powerhouse when it hit Stateside cinemas under the title Five Fingers of Death. From there we see Chang Cheh, arguably Shaw’s most prolific director, helm the blood-soaked brutality of The Boxer from Shantung and Chinatown Kid, the latter set on the streets of San Francisco.

A pair of paranormal investigators are making their nightly rounds on the seedy streets of New York City when they encounter a group of party-hopping girls looking for a warehouse rave – who have also just accidentally opened a portal to hell. What follows is a night of practical effects monster mayhem as the group try to save themselves, and the entire planet, from a demonic invasion. The first feature from prolific 1990s Shot-On-Video writer, producer, director Kevin J. Vile

MVD Visual | 2011 | 84 min | Not Rated
Directed by Taylor Sheridan

A group of strangers find themselves imprisoned in a house. Unsure of why they are there or who is behind it, they are soon enlightened by a video advising them there is a way out. But the threshold they must cross in order to escape is one of excruciating pain and – in the face of torture – not everyone is willing to play by the newly created rules, as they are soon ripped apart by infighting, secret alliances, double-crosses and shattering outbursts of violence, and with the clock ticking down, the “one for all” mentality devolves. Just how far will each of them go to survive?

Visible Secret

Radiance Films | 2001 | 101 min | Unrated
Directed by Ann Hui

Spirits lurk everywhere in Ann (Boat People) Hui’s horror-comedy, Visible Secret. Instantly infatuated by enigmatic amnesiac June (Shu Qi, Millennium Mambo) who has the ability to see spirits, Peter is swept into a world where he has one foot in the past, one in the present, and somehow has to figure out which is which. Beautifully shot by legendary cinematographer Arthur Wong (The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, Iron Monkey), Visible Secret is a slick and sexy horror-comedy that reflects the region’s contemporary millennium-era moment in its vivid depiction of young people stranded in history, trying to get a handle on both the world around them and each other as they navigate life, love, identity and family.
