Criterion | 1978-1985 | 6 Movies | 583 min | Not Rated

Scrapper

Kino Lorber | 2023 | 84 min | Not Rated
Directed by Nia Vardalos

This vibrant and inventive father-daughter comedy follows Georgie (Lola Campbell), a resourceful 12-year-old who secretly lives alone in her flat in a working class suburb of London following the death of her beloved mum. She makes money stealing bikes with her best friend Ali (Alin Uzun) and keeps the social workers off her back by pretending to live with an uncle. But when her estranged father Jason (Harris Dickinson; Triangle of Sadness, Beach Rats) turns up out of the blue, she’s forced to confront reality. Uninterested in this sudden new parental figure, Georgie is stubbornly resistant to Jason’s efforts and they quickly find that they both still have a lot of growing up to do. Dickinson and remarkable newcomer Campbell imbue irresistible charm into this moving and frequently hilarious story of two emotionally tangled people: a grieving kid thrust into adulthood and a father in over his head. Winner of a Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, Scrapper is a joyful comedy about family and fresh starts that believes life’s not so much about chasing rainbows as snatching fistfuls in both hands.

The Buster Keaton Collection: Volume 5

(Three Ages / Our Hospitality)

Cohen Media Group | 1923 | 2 Movies | 139 min | Not Rated
Directed by Buster Keaton, John G. Blystone, & Edward F. Cline

Three Ages was Buster’s first foray into feature film production after a successful string of shorts. This hilariously inventive satire of D.W. Griffith’s INTOLERANCE follows the age-old story of misadventures on the road to finding love, retold in three separate eras, a structure that cleverly allowed Keaton to recut the film into three separate shorts if it failed as a feature. For this restoration, 5 elements were compared, with a second-generation duplicate negative being used for the majority.

Out Hospitality is perhaps Keaton’s most nuanced comedy and again finds Buster recreating a bygone era. In it, he plays a 19th-century New Yorker who returns to the antebellum South to claim his inheritance, but finds himself also inheriting a longstanding multi-generational feud between his family and that of the woman he loves (played by Buster’s real-life spouse, Natalie Talmadge). For this restoration, a total of 17 film elements were compared, with a first-generation nitrate positive held at the Library of Congress being the main element used.
