As we enter the final months of Best Buy carrying physical media, the release schedule continues to be stacked, either online or in Walmart. With Black Friday deals remaining underwhelming, there was very little to get excited about with the holidays around when it came to getting previous releases at a discount. I did partake in the Criterion and MVD sales this month.
My favorite release from November was the “WandaVision: Season One” steel book from Walt Disney, which contained some fine artwork. I also want to keep praising them for making their digital releases available on physical media amidst the war that wages for producing a physical disc release for streaming fodder. I was also a fan of the two box sets released this month, “Twilight” and “Resident Evil,” although the latter was the superior release, coming in a rigid steel book box set case.
The 2023 releases that I purchased included “Oppenheimer,” “Gran Turismo,” “The Equalizer 3,” and “Expend4bles,” all of which got Best Buy Exclusive Steelbook releases, with both “Gran Turismo” and “The Equalizer 3” also getting exclusives from Walmart. “The Nun II” and “Saw X” also hit shelves this week, but I did not buy the American releases as I ordered international steelbooks for them. I did purchase “It Lives Inside,” “Showing Up,” and “Sympathy For The Devil,” which also came out in 2023.
My least favorite releases of the month were the steelbooks for “American Graffiti” and “Rudy,” as the artwork does little to sell the films. Look at the releases for “Black Hawk Down” or “The Guns Of Navarone,” which deliver stellar artwork for past titles. I adore that Walmart is picking up where Best Buy left off, but I’m not the biggest fan of their steelbook releases. It’s a lot of smaller, lesser-known titles, and the quality of the steel books is not what Best Buy has been offering throughout the years.
