In a world of fleeting memories and daily news turnover, Mystyslav Chernov, Evgeniy Maloletka, and Vasilisa Stepanenko undertook the challenging task of portraying the harsh realities endured by the Mariupol’s civilians during the Russian invasion – an unforgettable account. As we see yet another war unfolding before us today, 20 Days in Mariupol serves as a poignant reminder that photographic evidence holds everyone accountable. The film bears witness to the tragedies and the resilience of the civilians and frontline workers, emphasizing its significance beyond a mere war film. In light of the wide variety of extraordinary films this year, choosing our nominees was a particularly difficult decision. Unfortunately, 20 Days of Mariupol couldn’t be included. The Cinematography Committee of the 39th IDA Documentary Awards wishes to extend an honorary mention to the entire team for their commendable efforts and risks taken.

Jurors were impressed by the 5 nominees, including the tour de force Dear Mama and Ladies First: The Story of Women in Hip Hop, two titles that brought very different perspectives into the history of rap, hip hop, and activism by focusing on individuals who were instrumental figures. Two additional titles, Burden of Proof and Deadlocked: How America Shaped the Supreme Court, dove deep into explorations of our justice system – from the personal quests of one family to decisions impacting a nation made by the highest court in the federal judiciary of the United States. Finally, Algiers, America, opened an intimate window into the heartbreaks, triumphs, and determination of the coaches and members of a high school football team within a community struggling with poverty and the prevalence of gun violence. A sixth title was an honorary mention: When Truth isn’t Truth: The Rudy Giuliani Story. While the series presents some broadly known history of Rudy Guiliani’s rise and fall, it details how Guiliani’s actions in the present are not anomalous, but can be traced far back into his actions of the past.

So many incredible series were in this year’s Best Short-Form Series submissions; all are to be commended. As a Jury, we wanted to make a special mention of Equals. This seven-part series explores the rich melodies and unveils vibrant participants, stories, and the multifaceted layers of India’s folk traditions. It stands as a vivid ode to the artistry, resilience, and cultural significance embedded within each lyrical note—a testament to the enduring legacy of these visionary artists. It is rare to see mainstream commissioned work that is not about war, poverty, or despair, especially out of the global south. It is also rare to see commissioned work that goes beyond pop culture or celebrities. Equals, in many ways, pushes the boundaries of what can be “commissioned” and what can be “popular.” As a series, Equals goes beyond socio-economic barriers and borders and celebrates India’s unique cultural heritage. Equals gives a platform to stories that we would otherwise never have access to in the mainstream. That’s why we strongly feel that Equals should receive a special mention award – because we want to encourage streamers and broadcasters to take risks and include stories that will never otherwise be told.
