The new year started slow for physical media, with the release schedule remaining relatively light. Some of the brand new films on physical media included 2023’s “The Holdovers,” which ended up with five Academy Award nominations, “The Marsh King’s Daughter,” starring Daisy Ridley and Ben Mendelsohn, and “Trolls Band Together,” with a “Sing-Along Edition.” The Christmas film Like most Lionsgate Steelbook releases, “Silent Night” was one of the best releases of the month, with a Walmart Exclusive 4K Steelbook featuring the clear slipcover that generally accompanied the Best Buy Exclusives from the studio.
Boutique Labels saw the releases of “Chopper” and “Thinner” from Shout Factory, “Carrie” and “The Conan Chronicles” from Arrow Video, “Queen of Earth” from Vinegar Syndrome, and “High Tension” from Second Sight. Several international releases shipped this month, with the Oscar-nominated “The Creator” and “Dog Soldiers” getting 4K Steelbook releases. “Oldboy” received a 4K Box Set release, as did the Oscar-winning “Gladiator,” which the Titans of Cult released in two separate Box Sets, which were both some of my favorites of the month. Some other Steelbooks included “Walk Hard” from Walmart, which happened to be one of my least favorite releases of the month, “Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part 1” from Warner Bros, and “The Raid: Redemption” from Sony. Next month, I’m looking forward to “The Marvels” and “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” coming out from Walmart with their 4K Steelbooks.
