David Tenant hosted the 77th Annual EE BAFTA Awards Sunday morning/afternoon, three weeks before the same filmmakers and celebrities look to take the stage in Los Angeles, CA for the 96th Academy Awards. Most of the biggest contenders set for the Oscars were present, with many nominations for films like “Oppenheimer,” “Barbie,” and “Poor Things.” An awards body that skews toward British and international talent, there are evident delineations regarding the winners of the two significant ceremonies. For example, Emma Stone won Best Leading Actress while her biggest Oscar competition, Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), was not nominated.

Throughout the broadcast, “Oppenheimer” took multiple awards, including Best Leading Actor and Supporting Actor for Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. The film also won numerous technical awards, including Best Original Score, Film Editing, and Cinematography. Christopher Nolan won Best Director and was present when it won Best Film, with Emma Thomas accepting the award. “Poor Things” also won several technical awards, including Best Costume Design, Production Design, Makeup & Hair, and Special Visual Effects. “Barbie” missed all its categories, with Oscars pundits now wondering if it will only grab Best Original Song. In quite a surprise, Cord Jefferson won the award for Best Adapted Screenplay for the writing of “American Fiction,” beating out more prominent contenders like “Oppenheimer,” “Poor Things,” and Best Film Not In The English Language and Outstand British Film “The Zone Of Interest.”
