Blue Velvet (#977)

Criterion | 1986 | 120 min | Rated R
Directed by David Lynch

Home from college, Jeffrey Beaumont (Kyle MacLachlan) makes an unsettling discovery: a severed human ear, lying in a field. In the mystery that follows, by turns terrifying and darkly funny, writer-director David Lynch burrows deep beneath the picturesque surfaces of small-town life. Driven to investigate, Jeffrey finds himself drawing closer to his fellow amateur sleuth, Sandy Williams (Laura Dern), as well as their person of interest, lounge singer Dorothy Vallens (Isabella Rossellini)—and facing the fury of Frank Booth (Dennis Hopper), a psychopath who will stop at nothing to keep Dorothy in his grasp. With intense performances and hauntingly powerful scenes and images, Blue Velvet is an unforgettable vision of innocence lost, and one of the most influential American films of the late twentieth century.

Orlando, My Political Biography

Criterion | 2023 | 102 min | Not Rated
Directed by Paul Preciado

“Come, come! I’m sick to death of this particular self. I want another.” Taking Virginia Woolf’s novel Orlando: A Biography as his starting point, academic virtuoso turned filmmaker Paul B. Preciado fashioned the documentary Orlando, My Political Biography—a personal essay, historical analysis, and social manifesto. For almost a century, Woolf’s eponymous hero(ine) has inspired readers with their gender fluidity as well as their physical and spiritual metamorphoses across a three-hundred-year span. In making his film, Preciado invited a diverse group of more than twenty trans and nonbinary people to play the role of Orlando and to participate in this shared biography. Together, they perform interpretations of the novel, weaving into Woolf’s narrative their own stories of transition and identity formation. Not content to simply update a groundbreaking work, Preciado interrogates the relevance of Orlando in the ongoing struggle to secure dignity for trans people worldwide.

The Case of the Bloody Iris

Celluloid Dreams | 1972 | 94 min | Not Rated
Directed by Giuliano Carnimeo

From a script by the master architect of giallo, Ernesto Gastaldi (THE STRANGE VICE OF MRS. WARDH, ALL THE COLORS OF THE DARK, DEATH WALKS ON HIGH HEELS), comes genre director Giuliano Carnimeo’s sexually-charged giallo debut (credited as Anthony Ascott), presented here, for the first time, in 4K ultra-high definition. The gruesome murders of two young women send a shockwave of fear through the tenants of a high-rise apartment building. For photo models Jennifer and Marylin, it presents a welcome opportunity to move in together in one of the emptied flats. But the aura of terror catches up with everyone and soon, Jennifer feels like prey, stalked and targeted by the gloved killer. As her paranoia grows, Jennifer suspects everyone–her fanatic ex-husband, her spinster neighbor, the lesbian from down the hall, and even her boyfriend. But she is determined to stay one step ahead of the depraved killer! Starring giallo’s ultimate scream queen, Edwige Fenech (STRIP NUDE FOR YOUR KILLER, HOSTEL: PART II), alongside George Hilton (THE STRANGE VICE OF MRS. WARDH, THE CASE OF THE SCORPION’S TAIL) in their third collaboration together, “The Case of the Bloody Iris” is “pure giallo fun” (Mondo Digital). With its beautiful cinematography masterfully contrasted by its brutal violence, the film is every bit as exploitative and blood-spattered as it is sultry and salacious, turning it into “a luxuriant banquet of sumptuous visuals, sinister chills, and otherworldly beauty” (Deadshed). Celluloid Dreams is proud to present this newly scanned version, restored in 4K from the original camera negatives. It is the version of “The Case of the Bloody Iris” you’ve been dying to see.

Macbeth

Kino Lorber | 1948 | 1 Movie, 2 Cuts | 107 min | Not Rated
Directed by Orson Welles

Something wicked this way comes in Orson Welles’s cinematic retelling of William Shakespeare’s immortal classic. The larger-than-life Welles (Citizen Kane, The Lady from Shanghai, Othello, Touch of Evil) adapts, produces, directs and stars as the titular Scottish lord who is tragically undone by his own vaulting ambition. Welles’s noir-tinged interpretation bubbles over with supernatural prophecy and murderous intrigue, effectively mixing the use of shadow and oblique camera angles (courtesy of cinematographer John L. Russell, Psycho) to achieve an ominous sense of a land in peril. Co-starring Dan O’Herlihy (Robinson Crusoe), Roddy McDowall (Planet of the Apes), Alan Napier (TV’s Batman) and Jeanette Nolan (The Big Heat) in her stunning film debut as Lady Macbeth, this iconic Mercury Production of The Scottish Play is an altogether stark and singular vision. This 2-disc Special Edition includes both the original 1948 119-minute cut, replete with overture/exit music and affected Highland burrs, and the 1950 pared-down 85-minute re-release which excised most of the accented dialogue.

The Man I Love

Warner Bros. | 1947 | 96 min | Not Rated
Directed by Raoul Walsh

Torch singer Petey Brown is beautiful and smart. The beautiful gets her in trouble. She’ll need all the smarts to get out of it in this bluesy, boozy noir salute to tough dames in tough times. On a holiday visit to her family in the waning days of World War II, Petey expects a merry Christmas. Instead, she gets a tangled web of mobsters, cheating wives, war-traumatized vets and the kind of love that grabs hold fast and goes wrong faster. Ida Lupino portrays Petey, scoring a triumph under the direction of Raoul Walsh, who helped put her on the road to stardom in the Bogart classic High Sierra. The Man I Love is also notable for its songbook of sophisticated standards and as one of the inspirations for Martin Scorsese’s “New York, New York”. This new Blu-ray presentation restores 6 minutes cut from the film and unseen for nearly seven decades. Now, newly remastered the film can finally be experienced as first shown in its original theatrical release.

Mouthpiece

Kino Lorber | 2018 | 91 min | Unrated
Directed by Patricia Rozema

Mouthpiece is a brilliant black comedy from director Patricia Rozema (I’ve Heard the Mermaids Singing), adapted from the play by Amy Nostbakken and Norah Sadava. It follows Cassandra, an aspiring writer who, while struggling to compose a eulogy after the sudden death of her mother, comes to discover that her own rebelliousness is as much a response to the male gaze as her mother’s conformity. Enacting the two sides of Cassandra’s conflicting inner dialogue, playwright-performers Nostbakken and Sadava create a compelling portrayal of the tension between regression and progress that is often found within women.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith

Warner Bros. | 1941 | 95 min | Not Rated
Directed by Alfred Hitchcock

“If you had it to do all over again, would you have married me?” Yes, gentlemen, there is a right answer. That’s something David Smith learns the hard way when his bubbly and beautiful wife Ann queries him over breakfast. Also right are radiant Carole Lombard and easygoing Robert Montgomery as the stars of this breezy Alfred Hitchcock comedy. For three years, the Smiths have been blissed but battling. When a technicality voids their union, Mr. misses Mrs., orbiting the tale into the delightful confection of the screwball genre. From a script by Academy Award® winner Norman Krasna, Hitchcock made his change-of-pace foray into the all-out humor memorable. “Here again are his unmistakable touches” Look Magazine declared. “The net effect is the same, too: another Alfred Hitchcock hit.”

The North Star / Armored Attack!

Kino Lorber | 1943-1957 | 2 Movies | Not Rated
Directed by Lewis Milestone

June, 1941. When the school year ends, five friends from a small Ukrainian village decide to travel to Kiev. Their trip is cut short when German aircraft attack and their town falls under occupation. While many escape to the hills to form an anti-Nazi resistance group, a German military doctor, Otto von Harden (Erich von Stroheim, Five Graves to Cairo), begins to use the children for medical experiments and as sources of blood transfusions for wounded German soldiers. Directed by Lewis Milestone (All Quiet on the Western Front), this story of valiant resistance stars Anne Baxter (Yellow Sky), Dana Andrews (Canyon Passage), Walter Brennan (Rio Bravo), Farley Granger (Rope), Dean Jagger (Pursued) and Walter Huston (The Treasure of the Sierra Madre) as the Russian doctor who discovers the nefarious German plot. The North Star (1943) was re-edited and re-released in the midst of the Cold War as Armored Attack! (1957), excising references to the allied Russian military and adding an overtly anti-Communist narration track. This Blu-ray includes both Armored Attack! as well as the newly remastered and complete original theatrical cut of The North Star, which runs 30 minutes longer and preserves Milestone’s initial vision of the film before these politically motivated changes were made. This acclaimed original cut was nominated for 6 Academy Awards for the year 1943, including Best Cinematography (James Wong Howe), Music (Aaron Copland) and Original Screenplay (Lillian Hellman).

The Shining Hour

Warner Bros. | 1938 | 76 min | Not Rated
Directed by Frank Borzage

When Joan Crawford saw The Shining Hour on the Broadway stage, she pleaded with M-G-M executives to let her spread her acting wings in the film version. Ms. Crawford got her way, playing a New York siren who marries a prosperous farmer (Melvyn Douglas) and moves to Wisconsin. There she is drawn to his handsome brother (Robert Young) , even as she befriends the brother’s selfless wife (Margaret Sullavan, Crawford’s choice for the role). The passionate triangle plays out in the best tradition of classic screen melodrama, glossy and chic, but resonant with honest emotion, all under the expert direction of the great Frank Borzage. The film’s heart-stopping climax with Crawford battling flames to rescue Sullavan from certain death is both literally and figuratively, incendiary filmmaking.

When Night Is Falling

Kino Lorber | 1995 | 94 min | Not Rated
Directed by Patricia Rozema

Long considered to be a pivotal addition to the LGTBQ+ canon, the film centres on the story of Camille (Pascale Bussières), a professor at a Protestant college who is engaged to Martin (Henry Czerny), a respected minister and fellow professor. As ‘career Christians’ they are urged to get married so that they can become co-chaplains of the New College of Faith. When Camille meets Petra (Rachel Crawford), a wry and flamboyant performer in a modern Felliniesque circus troupe, she is inexplicably drawn. Camille pursues this sensual, dream-like woman, throwing her whole conservative life, not to mention her engagement, into disarray. A Canadian classic that was in Official Competition at the 1995 Berlin International Film Festival, When Night Is Falling tells a lesbian story beautifully photographed by Douglas Koch, catching a romantic wintry Toronto landscape.

White Room

Kino Lorber | 1990 | 93 min | Not Rated
Directed by Patricia Rozema

Available in the U.S. for the first time, Patricia Rozema’s ambitious follow up to I’ve Heard The Mermaids Singing follows Norman (Maurice Godin, House), a gentle aspiring author with writer’s block, who spies on his neighbors for inspiration. When he witnesses the murder of famous singer Madeline X (Margot Kidder, Superman), he attends her memorial and encounters a mesmerizing woman (Kate Nelligan, The Cider House Rules) who he follows home. Or is she leading him? As her gardener, he discovers her nightly visits to a secret room and a possible connection to the murder. Set in Toronto of the ’90s, this twisted urban fairy tale, as much about the consequences of naive romanticism as our uniquely modern obsession with celebrity, has two endings – one tragic, one euphoric, both essential.
