Mother (#1232)

Criterion | 1996 | 104 min | Rated PG-13
Directed by Albert Brooks

Reeling after his second divorce and struggling with writer’s block, sci-fi novelist John Henderson (Albert Brooks) resolves to figure out where his life went wrong, and hits on an unorthodox solution: moving back in with his relentlessly disapproving, cheerfully passive-aggressive mother (Debbie Reynolds), whose favorite son has always been John’s younger brother, Jeff (Rob Morrow). It’s an experiment that, however harebrained, delivers surprising results. Brooks’s film perfectly blends the writer-director-star’s biting wit with insight and inviting warmth, while giving him a formidable foil in the delightful Reynolds, triumphant in a comeback role that’s equal parts caustic and charming.

Real Life (#1231)

Criterion | 1979 | 99 min | Rated PG
Directed by Albert Brooks

Decades before reality television reigned supreme, there was Albert Brooks’s debut feature, Real Life, a brilliantly deadpan, stylistically innovative satire about the perils and pitfalls of trying to capture the truth on film. The writer-director plays “Albert Brooks,” a narcissistic Hollywood filmmaker who plans to spend the year in Phoenix embedded with Warren and Jeanette Yeager (Charles Grodin and Frances Lee McCain) and their two children, deploying an arsenal of cutting-edge equipment (including the over-the-head Ettinauer 226XL camera) to capture an American family’s ordinary day-to-day. Chronicling the project’s disastrous fallout, as the meddlesome Albert can’t help getting too close to his subjects, this pioneering mockumentary is more relevant than ever amid today’s media landscape.

DIRECTOR-APPROVED 4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES

  • New 4K digital restoration, supervised and approved by director Albert Brooks, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack

Alphaville

Kino Lorber | 1965 | 99 min | Not Rated
Directed by Jean-Luc Godard

From Jean-Luc Godard, the influential filmmaker behind the French New Wave classics, Breathless, Contempt, Band of Outsiders and Pierrot Le Fou, comes this futuristic noir masterpiece. American secret agent Lemmy Caution (Eddie Constantine, Attack of the Robots) is sent to the distant space city of Alphaville where he must find a missing person and kill the inventor of fascist computer Alpha 60. Anna Karina (The Nun) and Akim Tamiroff (Touch of Evil) co-star in this cockeyed fusion of science-fiction with pulp characters and surrealist poetry. Godard’s irreverent journey to the mysterious Alphaville remains one of the least conventional films of all time. Desperado

Arrow | 1995 | 104 min | Rated R
Directed by Robert Rodriguez

After turning the independent film world upside-down with his inventive microbudget debut, writerdirector Robert Rodriguez continued the myth of the mysterious Mariachi in the follow-up Desperado, armed with all the explosive pyrotechnics that Hollywood studio money can buy! A shadowy figure stalks the Mexican underworld, travelling from town to town with only a guitar case in hand; however, what El Mariachi (Antonio Banderas) has on his mind isn’t music, but merciless vengeance. With enough bullets up his sleeves for every bandito in his path, the guitar-playing gunslinger has his sights firmly set on taking down a powerful drug lord (Joaquim de Almeida), but only the love of a local bookstore owner (Salma Hayek) will help the Mariachi get out of town alive. With a rogues’ gallery of memorable supporting turns from the likes of Danny Trejo, Steve Buscemi, Cheech Marin and Quentin Tarantino, Rodriguez’s instant action classic blends American indie cool and Hong Kong hyperkineticism with a Latino flavor firmly the director’s own.

Goin’ South

Cinématographe | 1978 | 109 min | Rated PG
Directed by Jack Nicholson

Henry Moon (Jack Nicholson, Chinatown) is a cut-rate outlaw in post-Civil War Texas, convicted of bank robbery and property theft. Moon is sentenced to death by hanging in the town of Longhorn, a town that maintains an ordinance allowing for any condemned man to be freed from the gallows via marriage. Julia Tate (Mary Steenburgen, Clifford), a quiet virginal young woman with a secret gold mine, saves Moon from the gallows in an attempt to exploit him for free labor. With Moon intent on consummating his marriage to a virgin bride and Tate seeking to mine her hidden fortune, the two embark on an equally combative, comedic, relationship in the Old West.

The sophomore feature directorial effort from Jack Nicholson, following his counterculture comedy Drive, He Said in 1971, GOIN’ SOUTH is a commonly overlooked entry in Nicholson’s repertoire as an actor and filmmaker. Featuring gorgeous photography from noted cinematographer Néstor Almendros (Days of Heaven) and a talented comedic cast including John Belushi (Animal House), Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future), Danny DeVito (Wise Guys) and Ed Begley Jr. (Blue Collar), Cinématographe is proud to present Jack Nicholson’s wild western comedy on Blu-ray and 4KBlu-ray for the first time in the world from a brand new 4K restoration of its original camera negative!

Last Year at Marienbad

Kino Lorber | 1961 | 94 min | Not Rated
Directed by Alain Resnais

Winner of the Golden Lion at the 1961 Venice Film Festival, Last Year at Marienbad is a hypnotically beautiful puzzle box of a film, and one of the most influential in history. Alain Resnais’s sensuous tracking shots and Delphine Seyrig’s iconic Chanel gowns have become part of the cinematic lexicon, and can now be seen in a gorgeous 4K restoration from StudioCanal. In a large international hotel in the European resort town of Marienbad, with a sumptuous but austere décor—a marble universe with gold paneling, statues, and stiff servants—the rich, anonymous clientele circulates. A man (Giorgio Albertazzi) is convinced he met an enigmatic woman (Seyrig, Jeanne Dielman) the previous year at the same location, and perhaps had a flirtation. A second man (Sacha Pitoëff, Inferno), possibly the woman’s lover or husband, repeatedly intimidates the first man. Their relations unfold through flashback shards that never quite fit into place, their lives a hall of mirrors that never reflect a true self.

Reptilicus

Vinegar Syndrome | 1961 | 1 Movie, 2 Cuts | 82 min | Not Rated
Directed by Sidney W. Pink & Poul Bang

A group of mining engineers prospecting for copper in the mountains of Lapland make an incredible discovery when their drilling unearths the remains of a giant, prehistoric amphibious reptile. A section of the creature’s tail is exhumed from beneath the frozen tundra and transported to the National Aquarium in Copenhagen, where it’s placed in a cold room to be studied by Professor Otto Martens and his research team. But when the door to the room is accidentally left ajar, the tail segment begins to thaw, quickly regenerating itself into a gigantic beast! Now loose and embarking on a cross-country rampage, the military are forced to employ all means necessary to rout the creature – now dubbed “Reptilicus” – before it launches a full-scale attack on the capital.

A Danish-American co-production, REPTILICUS is a delirious creature feature which serves as the Scandinavian answer to Godzilla, complete with astonishing scenes of its titular monster causing carnage in Copenhagen. Filmed in both Danish and English language versions, directed by Poul Bang and Sidney W. Pink (Journey to the Seventh Planet) respectively, REPTILICUS features a nearly identical cast to its Danish counterpart but adds in unique special effects flourishes such as the beast spewing acid saliva on its victims. The monster maniacs at Vinegar Syndrome are thrilled to regenerate REPTILICUS in a new 4K restoration from the original negative for its world UHD premiere, alongside an HD transfer of the Danish-language version – available on disc for the first time ever in the U.S. – and an array of newly-produced bonus features.

Thieves Like Us

Cinématographe | 1974 | 123 min | Rated R
Directed by Robert Altman

In Depression Era Mississippi of the 1930s, three men – Bowie (Keith Carradine, The Long Riders), Chicamaw (John Schuck, McCabe & Mrs. Miller) and T-Dub (Burt Remsen, California Split) – break out of prison before embarking on a bank robbery spree across the southern United States. Along the way, Bowie falls in love with Keechie (Shelley Duvall, Popeye) and plans for a future life without violence, if it doesn’t do him in first. Based on the novel of the same name by Edward Anderson, and adapted for the screen by Joan Tewkesbury (Nashville), Calder Willingham (Rambling Rose) and Robert Altman (who also directed), THIEVES LIKE US is a bullet-riddled romance that’s as concerned with the myth building of the American south as it is the very real relationships between its characters. An often overlooked entry into Altman’s illustrious career, releasing just a year prior to his magnum opus Nashville (1975), THIEVES LIKE US features a rousing ensemble cast that also includes Louise Fletcher (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest) and Tom Skerrit (Alien) as well as striking, sun lit, cinematography from noted French director of photograph Jean Boffety (Je T’Aime, Je T’Aime) and would-be iconic costumes by the multi-talented Polly Platt (Paper Moon). Cinématographe is proud to present one of Robert Altman’s very best films in its world 4K Blu-ray debut!

The Woman / Offspring

Arrow | 2009-2011 | 2 Movies | 182 min | Not Rated
Directed by Lucky McKee & Andrew van den Houten

Almost a decade after Lucky McKee burst upon the indie horror scene and became a ‘Master of Horror’ in the making thanks to his directorial debut May, he teamed up with legendary cult author Jack Ketchum for his most shocking and brutal film to date: The Woman, an instant cause célèbre on its Sundance premiere.

The Woman (Pollyanna McIntosh, The Walking Dead) is the last surviving member of a deadly clan of feral cannibals that has roamed the American wilderness for decades. When successful country lawyer Chris Cleek (Sean Bridgers, Room) stumbles upon her whilst hunting in the woods, he decides to capture and “civilize” her with the help of his seemingly perfect all-American family, including his wife Belle (Angela Bettis, May) and daughter Peggy (Lauren Ashley Carter, Darling). The Cleeks will soon learn, however, that hell hath no fury like The Woman scorned…

Experience McKee and Ketchum’s uncompromisingly twisted vision of the dark side of the American family in a definitive edition, including a 4K remaster, a slew of bonus features, and a bonus disc featuring a restoration of its gut-churning 2009 predecessor Offspring, also starring McIntosh.

Memento Mori: The Jörg Buttgereit Collection

(Nekromantik / Der Todesking / Nekromantik 2 / Schramm)

Arrow | 1988-1993 | 4 Movies, 6 Cuts | 314 min | Not Rated
Directed by Jörg Buttgereit

Shocking and controversial, yet permeated with a dark, poetic beauty, the films of underground German auteur Jörg Buttgereit stand at the very intersection between art and exploitation.

In Nekromantik, the director’s groundbreaking 1987 debut, nihilistic couple Rob and Betty seek to enliven their relationship by bringing a freshly-acquired corpse into the equation, with predictably nauseating results. 1990’s Der Todesking takes a more experimental – but no less gruelling – approach, offering up seven vignettes of suicide, one for each day of the week, all prompted by a mysterious chain letter. In 1991, Buttgereit would return to the realm of corpse-loving with Nekromantik 2, which sees the young Monika torn between the two men in her life – the dorky yet doting Mark, and a rapidly-decomposing cadaver. Lastly, with 1993’s Schramm, Buttgereit takes us deep into the deranged mind of a psychopath, charting the final days in the life of twisted sex killer Lothar Schramm.

With Memento Mori: The Jörg Buttgereit Collection – which brings together all four of the director’s feature films, packed with extras and accompanied by a wealth of exclusive content – Arrow Video is proud to offer up the definitive compendium of this most singular of genre filmmakers.

The Mexico Trilogy

(El Mariachi / Desperado / Once Upon A Time In Mexico)

Arrow | 1992-2003 | 3 Movies | 287 min | Rated R
Directed by Robert Rodriguez

A Tex-Mex tornado of fire and fury, writer-director Robert Rodriguez’s astonishing ‘Mexico Trilogy’ broke fresh new ground in American independent and action cinema, catapulting the filmmaker and his largely Hispanic cast and crew into the Hollywood stratosphere.

Rodriguez’s ingenious 1993 debut El Mariachi (infamously filmed for only $7000) sees a naive young musician entering a godforsaken border town and finding himself in the middle of a deadly case of mistaken identity. The major studio follow-up Desperado sees Antonio Banderas take up the mantle of the mysterious Mariachi, stalking the Mexican underworld with enough bullets up his sleeves for every bandito in his path. Finally, 2003’s Once Upon a Time in Mexico sees Rodriguez use every cutting-edge technological innovation in his arsenal to bring the trilogy’s explosive conclusion to the screen, as the Mariachi finds himself in the center of a bloody war for the soul of Mexico itself.

Fun, fast and full of invention and inspiration, this deadly trio cemented Robert Rodriguez’s reputation as an action auteur worth following, and are accompanied here by insightful new interviews with the director and his crew of collaborators.

Three Little Words

Warner Bros. | 1950 | 102 min | Not Rated
Directed by Richard Thorpe

Bert Kalmar (Fred Astaire) always wanted to be a magician, but all it takes is a disastrous opening night to make his dreams go poof! So, Kalmar moves on and finds songwriting magic with collaborator Harry Ruby. The stage-and-screen songsmiths whose many tunes include Groucho Marx’s signature Hooray for Captain Spaulding receive a Hollywood hooray in this audience-favorite screen biopic featuring a hit parade and Kalmar and Ruby standards (including “(Nevertheless) I’m in Love with You”, “Who’s Sorry Now”, and the title tune). Astaire puts on his dancing shoes for dazzling duets with Vera-Ellen, and a tap solo. The film was a box-office smash and a wonderful showcase for the terpsichorean talents of Astaire and Vera-Ellen, and one of Red Skelton’s best screen performances, which gave him the opportunity for a more substantial acting role that did just rely on his trademark comic genius. The film also is highlighted by a star-turn by Debbie Reynolds who portrays boop-oop-a-doop sensation Helen Kane, performing “I Wanna Be Loved By You” to vocals provided by Miss Kane herself.

Radiance Films | 1966 | 90 min | Not Rated

But escape proves to be impossible when an obligation to a gang boss leaves him with no choice but to kill a man. To atone for his crime, he vows to take care of his victim’s widow and young son. But the gang won’t rest until they’ve killed the entire family – including the man who stands in their way. Words and Music

Warner Bros. | 1948 | 120 min | Not Rated
Directed by Norman Taurog

Mickey Rooney, Tom Drake, Betty Garrett, Janet Leigh, and a host of top musical performers headline M-G-M producer Arthur Freed’s extravagant biographical tribute to the prolific songwriting duo of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart. In the early 1920s, the diminutive Hart (Rooney) teams up with Rodgers (Drake) to launch a successful 24-year music career, penning nearly 500 songs with him until Hart’s death in 1943 at the age of 47. Rodgers marries his dream girl (Leigh) while Hart pines after Peggy (Garrett), eventually spiraling into depression and death after her rejection. June Allyson, Perry Como, Ann Sothern, Mel Tormé, Cyd Charisse, Judy Garland, and Lena Horne are just some of the singing sensations featured. This is the last movie in which Garland and Rooney appeared together. It also boasts the first full-length modern ballet piece in a Hollywood movie: Choreographed and danced by Gene Kelly, with Vera-Ellen as his partner, “Slaughter on Tenth Avenue” provides the show-stopping seven-minute finale to the film. Among the hit songs performed are ” “Blue Moon,” “Thou Swell” “Manhattan,” “Johnny One Note,” “I Wish I Were in Love Again,” “Where or When,” and “The Lady Is a Tramp.”
