Howling II: Your Sister Is A Werewolf
Vinegar Syndrome | 1985 | 91 min | Not Rated
Directed by Philippe Mora
Ben is mourning the recent death of his sister, Karen, whom he believes to have been killed in a savage wolf attack. At her funeral, Ben is approached by the mysterious Stefan, who warns him that a cult of werewolves had attacked Karen and that she too will become an undead lycanthrope. Although dismissing his claim as mere superstition, Ben’s girlfriend Jenny convinces him that he should take Stefan’s warning more seriously, and, sure enough, Karen is soon back from the dead, covered in fur and complete with a deadly set of K9s. After being narrowly saved from a fatal bite by Stefan, Ben is persuaded that he’s telling the truth and volunteers to join him on his mission to destroy the increasing hoards of beastly creatures ravaging Europe. But as their journey takes them to Transylvania, where werewolves from around the world are gathering for their ritual, Ben and Stefan fear that they might be in over their heads, mainly once werewolf queen Stirba receives news of their arrival…
Australia’s king of B-movies, director Philippe Mora (Mad Dog Morgan, The Beast Within), delivers an outrageously blood-soaked sequel with HOWLING II: YOUR SISTER IS A WEREWOLF, assembling the talents of international sex symbol Sybil Danning (Reform School Girls), cult star Reb Brown (Yor: Hunter From the Future), musician and TV personality Jimmy Nail, alongside horror icons Ferdy Mayne (The Fearless Vampire Killers) and Christopher Lee (The Satanic Rites of Dracula). Shank
Cinématographe | 1974 | 93 min | Not Rated
Directed by William Castle
Malcolm Shanks (Marcel Marceau, Barbarella) is a deaf, mute, reclusive puppeteer who lives with his overbearing sister (Tsilla Chelton, Peppermint Soda) and her lush of a husband, Mr. Barton (Philippe Clay, French Cancan). The only source of joy in his harsh world is his puppets, which is noticed by a beguiling inventor named Dr. Baker (also played by Marceau), who promptly offers him a job as his assistant. Upon Dr. Baker’s sudden death, Shanks discovers that he can, with the aid of electrodes, reanimate the dead, bringing a new reality to their experiments.
The final film from gimmick-prone, American genre film icon William Castle (The Tingler, The House on Haunted Hill), SHANKS is a decidedly surrealist amalgamation of quirky fantasy and mid-70s character-driven horror. Anchored by a delectable dual performance from celebrated French actor Marcel Marcau, with potently eerie camera work by 13 Ghosts cinematographer Joseph F. Biroc and an atmospheric score by legendary composer Alex North (Spartacus, The Bad Seed), Cinématographe is proud to present William Castle’s often overlooked slice of mid- 70s alienation in its 4K Blu-ray debut from a brand new restoration from its original negative.

Through The Looking Glass
Vinegar Syndrome | 1972-1976 | 2 Movies | 92 min | Rated X
Directed by Jonas Middleton
Catherine’s life is one of luxury. But since the death of her beloved father, her stately family home, luxurious car, and refined sensibilities have not brought her happiness. Aloof and disinterested in her husband and daughter, Catherine prefers to spend her evenings engaged in sensual fantasies while sitting amongst the items from her childhood bedroom, now stored in a dark attic. But one stormy night, while seated in front of a large mirror, her father – or a demon in his shape – appears in the reflection, promising her untold pleasures and happiness if she simply comes through the glass. Frightened at first, Catherine eventually gives in and begins to visit the steadily more sinister world inside the mirror. But with each dream-like trip, the dark truths of her past, which she has tried so long to forget, start becoming more and more clear, all as the sinister power of temptation becomes wholly irresistible…
An unsettling supernatural thriller which explores the terror of long buried trauma, director Jonas Middleton (Just Before Dawn) and screenwriter Ron Wertheim’s (Memories Within Miss Aggie) genre defying masterpiece, THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, ranks as one of the finest examples of hardcore filmmaking ever produced. Assembling a outstanding cast headed by Catherine Burgess (Cinderella 2000, Expose Me Lovely), Jamie Gillis (Dracula Sucks), Teri Hall (The Story of Joanna), Kim Pope (The Intrusion), and Roger Caine (Martin) and featuring an acclaimed original score composed by Arlon Ober (Eating Raoul) and Harry Manfredini (Friday the 13th), this unforgettable journey into the macabre is at last making its 4K UHD and Blu-ray debut from Melusine, newly scanned and restored from its 35mm original negative and loaded with extras.

Daiei Gothic: Japanese Ghost Stories
Radiance Films | 1959-1968 | 3 Movies | 252 min | Not Rated
Directed by Tokuzô Tanaka, Satsuo Yamamoto, & Kenji Misumi
A collection of three of Japan’s most famous ghost stories that have haunted people for centuries. Kenji Misumi (Lone Wolf and Cub) directs The Ghost of Yotsuya, in which a woman returns from the grave as a horribly disfigured phantom to torment her husband and his new bride. In The Snow Woman, directed by Tokuzo Tanaka (Zatoichi), a woodcutter must keep his oath to a vengeful female spirit or pay the ultimate price. The Bride from Hades by Satsuo Yamamoto (Shinobi) sees a handsome samurai so enchanted by a courtesan’s beauty that he fails to realise she is a ghost. These three film versions from the Daiei studio form a pinnacle of atmospheric Japanese horror. Their elegant visuals and ominous shadows rival the best of Terence Fisher or Mario Bava, while their iconic female ghosts would greatly influence Asian genre cinema, from Hong Kong fantasy spectacles such as A Chinese Ghost Story to J-horror.

Deadly Circuit
Kino Lorber | 1983 | 120 min | Not Rated
Directed by Claude Miller
Isabelle Adjani (The Story of Adele H, Possession) is the ultimate femme fatale—a serial killer who lures wealthy men to their deaths. Michel Serrault (La Cage aux Folles), a solitary detective known as “The Eye,” is in pursuit. Convinced she is his long-lost daughter, he shadows her through Europe, concealing incriminating evidence and helping her elude the police as she changes identities and conducts a blood-soaked murder spree. But when Catherine falls in love with a blind artist (Sami Frey, Band of Outsiders), The Eye’s obsession grows even more extreme—and deadly. A brilliant, seductive, blackly comic Euro-noir confection, Deadly Circuit (Mortelle randonnée) was nominated for five César Awards, including Best Actor (Serrault), Best Supporting Actress (the wonderfully eccentric Stéphane Audran) and Best Cinematography (Pierre Lhomme). Lavishly directed by Claude Miller and co-scripted by father-and-son auteurs, Michel and Jacques Audiard, from Marc Behm’s novel Eye of the Beholder, the title for the 1999 American film based on the same subject directed by Stephen Elliott; and starring Ashley Judd and Ewan McGregor. “The most stylized, the most beautiful, and the most literary of all French thrillers.” — Télérama

Radiance Films | 1988 | 109 min | Not Rated
Directed by Toshio Matsumoto
A man wakes in an asylum with no memory. Dr Wakabayashi helps him to recall his past in which he killed his bride on their wedding day. Part of his memory becomes linked to another doctor, Dr Masaki, and a manuscript, Dogra Magra. As the two doctors treat him, reality and fantasy become blurred and the patient becomes unsure of his identity or his doctors’ experiments. The final feature film by Toshio Matsumoto (Funeral Parade of Roses) is an adaptation of the celebrated novel by Kyusaku Yumeno, a period set gothic tale with a sense of dreamy dread that recalls Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Cure and the locked room mystery of Shutter Island. A stunningly shot phantasmagoria by Tatsuo Suzuki (Pastoral: To Die in the Country), Dogra Magra is presented on Blu-ray for the first time outside of Japan.

El Vampiro: Two Bloodsucking Tales from Mexico
(The Vampire | The Vampire’s Coffin)
Powerhouse Films | 1957-1958 | 2 Movies | Not Rated
Directed by Fernando Méndez
El Vampiro: Two Bloodsucking Tales from Mexico brings together a pair of atmospheric and terrifying classics of Mexican Gothic, directed by Fernando Méndez (Black Pit of Dr. M), and starring Ariadne Welter (The Panther Women), Abel Salazar (The Curse of the Crying Woman), and, in a star-making turn, Germán Robles (The Brainiac). In The Vampire (El vampiro), the beautiful, bereaved Marta (Welter) travels with Enrique (Salazar) to visit her sick aunt in her ancestral home. There, the mysterious neighbour Duval (Robles) offers to buy the family’s decrepit hacienda. However, Duval is really Count Karol de Lavud, a vampire whose aim is to drain Marta of her blood and revive his entombed brother.
In the sequel, The Vampire’s Coffin (El ataúd del vampiro), grave robbers bring Lavud’s corpse to Enrique’s city hospital, where Marta now works as a nurse. Duly re-animated, Lavud sets about his bloody plan to make Marta his bride. Pre-dating Hammer Films’ Dracula by a year, The Vampire’s uniquely Mexican take on vampire mythology was the first film to give its antagonist elongated fangs, and its success kick-started Mexico’s horror boom. Restored from the original negatives, these films finally receive their world Blu-ray premieres in this individually numbered Limited Edition two-disc set, complete with new and archival extra features, and a fully illustrated 80-page book.

Enough Rope
Kino Lorber | 1963 | 104 min | Not Rated
Directed by Claude Autant-Lara
From the pen of acclaimed American novelist Patricia Highsmith (Strangers on a Train, The Talented Mr. Ripley) comes this rare gem of French neo-noir, Enough Rope (Le meurtrier), directed by Claude Autant-Lara (Devil in the Flesh). In a world inhabited by killers and cheats, architect Walter Saccard (Maurice Ronet, Purple Noon) is unhappily married to Clara (Yvonne Furneaux, The Champagne Murders). His idle interest in the spousal murder case of bookseller Melchior Kimmel (Gert Fröbe, Goldfinger) becomes something more intense when the accused is acquitted, and Walter, who believes him guilty, strikes up his acquaintance. When Clara is found dead, Kimmel in turn believes Walter responsible, while a detective (Robert Hossein, The Road to Shame) suspects the two deaths to be connected in this twisting, suspense-drenched masterpiece of mainstream French cinema made at the height of the Nouvelle Vague. Co-starring Marina Vlady (Two or Three Things I Know About Her) and based on Highsmith’s third novel, The Blunderer.

The Falling Star
Kino Lorber | 2023 | 98 min | Not Rated
Directed by Dominique Abel & Fiona Gordon
Fiona Gordon and Dominique Abel (THE FAIRY, LOST IN PARIS) delight audiences with their blend of slapstick and burlesque. Their latest “crime movie” transmutes the codes of film noir through their characteristically colorful palette and clownish plot twists. Abel plays Boris, a former activist hiding from his dark past, keeping in the shadows as a barkeeper, until a one-armed vigilante finally hunts him down. The fortuitous appearance of a double—the depressive recluse Dom (also played by Abel) seems to offer the perfect decoy. But his tenacious and loopy ex-wife, the private eye Fiona (Gordon), could foil their master plan. Abel and Gordon’s memorable dose of hilarity seems perfectly calibrated to the social mood; each deceptively minimalistic set piece brims with a cinematic intelligence that recalls Tati and Keaton. The cast features Philippe Martz and Bruno Romy and the Japanese dancer Kaori Ito, who plays a willful and hilariously unpredictable femme fatale.

Film Noir: The Dark Side of Cinema XXII
(The Enforcer | The Scarlet Hour | Plunder Road)
Kino Lorber | 1951-1957 | 3 Movies | Not Rated
Directed by Hubert Cornfield, Michael Curtiz, Bretaigne Windust, & Raoul Walsh
This collection features three film noir classics of the ’50s. THE ENFORCER (1951) – They Called Him The Enforcer… Screen legend Humphrey Bogart (The Maltese Falcon, Deadline – U.S.A.) is in fine form as a crusading District Attorney out to convict the head of a vicious murder-for-hire ring. But when his star witness is killed, Bogie must race against time to find the evidence he needs to bring the mob boss to justice. Told in a series of flashbacks, this tense, tough-as-nails crime thriller on the cutting edge of film noir was based on the true-life “Murder, Inc.” trials. Stylishly directed by Bretaigne Windust (June Bride) with uncredited help from the great Raoul Walsh (High Sierra, Pursued) and beautifully shot by Robert Burks (Vertigo). The stellar cast includes Zero Mostel (The Producers) as nervy thug “Big Babe” Lazick, with villainous favorites Ted de Corsia (The Lady from Shanghai) and Everett Sloane (Citizen Kane). THE SCARLET HOUR (1956) – She’d Do Anything for a Thrill… Including Kill! From Michael Curtiz, the legendary director of Angels with Dirty Faces, Casablanca and Mildred Pierce, comes another dramatic triumph—The Scarlet Hour. Introducing Tom Tryon (The Cardinal) and Carol Ohmart (House on Haunted Hill) as sales manager E.V. “Marsh” Marshall and his boss’s wife Paulie, who, while scandalously parked out on Lovers’ Lane, overhear burglars planning for a heist of precious jewels. Driven by desire, Paulie and Marsh proceed to concoct a criminal scheme of their own. Twists and turns abound in Curtiz’s suspense-packed VistaVision production shot by Lionel Lindon (The Manchurian Candidate), co-starring Jody Lawrance, James Gregory, Elaine Stritch and E.G. Marshall. Guest star Nat King Cole, crooning “Never Let Me Go,” is a jazzy highlight. PLUNDER ROAD (1957) – Roaring Down Hell’s Highway with $10,000,000 in Stolen Gold! In this gritty, one-of-a-kind heist film, five men carry out an elaborate plan to rob $10 million in gold bullion from a San Francisco-bound U.S. Mint train on a dark and stormy night. To throw the police off the track, they split the massive haul into three concealed truckloads and go off in different directions, hoping for a perfect getaway. But will the looters escape justice, or meet their cruel fates on Plunder Road? Starring character-actor greats Gene Raymond, Wayne Morris, Elisha Cook Jr., Stafford Repp and Steven Ritch, with soap opera legend Jeanne Cooper (The Young and the Restless) as Raymond’s gun moll. Directed by cult favorite Hubert Cornfield (The Night of the Following Day) and shot in glorious Scope by the esteemed Ernest Haller (Mildred Pierce).

Hi-De-Ho and the Boarding House Blues
Kino Lorber | 1947-1948 | 2 Movies | 162 min | Not Rated
Directed by Josh Binney
With his trademark scat singing and energetic performance style, jazz legend Cab Calloway (The Blues Brothers) stars in Hi De Ho as a bandleader who contends with a jealous girlfriend and gangland thugs in his rise to fame. In Boarding House Blues, Moms Mabely stars as the owner of a lodging house for touring musicians, with Dusty Fletcher her most troublesome tenant. Black-cast films originated as bare-bones productions manufactured to satisfy the demand of segregated theaters. But by the late 1940s, they had grown more ambitious in scale, showcasing the singers, dancers, and comedians who had begun to cross over to mainstream audiences during World War II, but were still denied entry to the studio system. Unhindered by the oppressive blanket of studio oversight, these marginalized films were more risqué than their big-budget counterparts, and have a freshness and vibrancy often missing from Hollywood formula product. Restored in 4K from the original 35mm negatives preserved by the Library of Congress.
SPECIAL FEATURES
- Introduction to Boarding House Blues by film historian Ina Archer
- Soundies musical shorts featuring Cab Calloway: Minnie the Moocher (1942), Blues in the Night (1942), and We the Cats Shall Hep Ya (1945)
- Soundies musical shorts featuring Lucky Millinder: Shout! Sister, Shout! (1941, with Sister Rosetta Tharpe), Hello Bill (1946), and I Want a Man (1946, with Annisteen Allen)

J-Horror Rising
Arrow | 1999-2007 | 7 Movies | 680 min | Rated R
Directed by Babak Payami
Vengeful ghosts returning from beyond the grave, young women with supernatural abilities, investigative narratives, a terror of technology, and an ominous aura of urban alienation and isolation mark the wave of horror and mystery films that emerged in Japan at the turn of the millennium, collectively labeled as “J-Horror”. Remastered from the best available elements and packed with a host of new and archival extras, J-Horror Rising presents seven of the genre’s most distinctive titles.
In the ghostly pastoral horror of Shikoku, a young woman returns after many years to her rural birthplace, only to find her best friend from childhood has died by drowning when just sixteen. The dead girl’s mother, the local Shintoist priestess, has embarked on the region’s famous pilgrimage – but why is she walking backwards? The aftermath of the devasting Kobe Earthquake of 1995 creates fissures in the already fractured mind of a high-school girl in Isola: Multiple Personality Girl, allowing an unwelcome intruder to set up home in her head and leaving a volunteer worker with psychic powers to determine which of her personas is the fake one. Shikoku also provides the mystical backdrop to Inugami, as a teacher from Tokyo finds himself drawn to a local papermaker, only to find himself the subject of some hostility from her extended family, who have long ties to the region and are rumored to be the descendants of the guardians of ancient evil canine spirits.
Megumi Okina (Ju-On: The Grudge) plays the art designer for a horror-themed videogame in the innovative St. John’s Wort, who is forced to confront her childhood traumas when her colleagues ask her to gather visual materials from the creepy gothic mansion she has inherited from her estranged artist father. Carved: The Slit-Mouthed Woman features the titular predatory murderess drawn from urban legend, where it turns out home isn’t the safest place for her potential child victims in this disturbing supernatural horror. A new craze for wearing ceramic masks sweeps the students of a high school, unleashing a wave of anonymous juvenile delinquency amongst the literal fashion-victims of Persona, which boasts early appearances from Battle Royale stars Tatsuya Fujiwara and Chiaki Kuriyama. Last but not least, the chilling Noroi: The Curse adopts a pseudo-documentary format as an investigative reporter into paranormal phenomena is forced to confront horrors beyond his wildest imagination after learning about an ancient folkloric demon.

Topkapi
Kino Lorber | 1964 | 120 min | Not Rated
Directed by Jules Dassin
A skillful blend of romance, adventure and comedy from Jules Dassin, the legendary director of the classic heist film, Rififi. Fun-filled and suspenseful, it’s an incredibly ingenious affair and a considerable pleasure to watch. Trouble brews beneath the exotically curved towers of Istanbul when the equally exotic—and equally curved—Elizabeth Lipp (Melina Mercouri, Never on Sunday) recruits her former lover (Maximilian Schell, Judgment at Nuremberg) in a scheme to heist the pride of the city’s Topkapi museum: a jewel-encrusted dagger. But the “job” soon turns into a high-tension, high wire act, when the bumbling fall guy (Peter Ustinov, Death on the Nile) and other amateurs they’ve hired as help get more than they had bargained for. The stellar cast also includes Robert Morley (When Eight Bells Toll), Jess Hahn (The Night of the Following Day) and Akim Tamiroff (Touch of Evil). Ustinov won the Best Actor in a Supporting Role Oscar for his wonderful performance. Topkapi shimmers with hilarity, action and great performances!
