The month of Halloween brought a ton of scary titles to physical media. Kicking off right away the first week, Shout Factory released “As Above, So Below,” Lionsgate released a 4K Steelbook of their 2024 title “Imaginary,” and Paramount debuted Volume Two of their “Paramount Scares” box set, which included 4Ks of “Breakdown,” “Friday the 13th Part III,” “World War Z,” and “Orphan: First Kill.” The second week brought Walmart Exclusive Steelbooks of “Five Nights At Freddy’s,” the David Gordon Green “Halloween” Trilogy, “The Strangers,” and “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey II.” There were also two Steelbook releases of the 2024 Paramount title “A Quiet Place: Day One,” a new Steelbook for the 25th Anniversary of “Sleepy Hollow,” and a double pack Steelbook of Jordan Peele’s first two films, “Get Out” and “Us.”
Continuing the horror movie theme of the month, the third week brought about two Steelbook releases of the original “A Nightmare On Elm Street,” one of which came in from overseas. The George A. Romero contemporary classic “Land of the Dead” was released by Shout Factory, while Sony put out their 2023 title “Thanksgiving” and Paramount put out a 4K upgrade of “The Ring.” The fourth week of October toned it down from horror, with Shout Factory’s release of “The Wolfman” and an international Steelbook of “Longlegs” being the only horror titles. Instead, two versions of the “Borderlands” Steelbook were released, along with Disney putting out two different “Deadpool & Wolverine” Steelbooks, which are my favorite releases of the month. And the last week of October brought it full circle with all horror titles, as I picked up Shout Factory’s “Drag Me To Hell” on 4K (even though they’ve since announced an upcoming Steelbook), Arrow’s “Trick ‘r’ Treat,” Second Sight’s “Late Night With The Devil” box set, and the Turbine Media re-release of Peter Jackson’s “The Frighteners” in a brand new Steelbook box set.
Other notable non-horror releases in Kino Lorber’s 4Ks of “Brick” and “Cowboys & Aliens” as well as their 4K upgrade of “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.” Also, the Columbia Classics line released Volume Five in the series, including two Academy Award winners for Best Picture, “A Man For All Seasons” and “All The King’s Men.” The 2024 release of “Twisters” received a Walmart exclusive Steelbook, as the original “Twister” film got an international 4K box set release. I wish the artwork for “The Strangers” Steelbook was a bit better, and the “Dances With Wolves” Steelbook is barely different from the last one that Shout Factory put out. Next month, I can’t wait for my Vinegar Syndrome Black Friday titles, the “Alien: Romulus” Steelbook, and Criterion’s “No Country For Old Men.” I’m also excited for “The Faculty” to finally come out on 4K, along with John Wayne’s “The Searchers.”
