DANCE FIRST

Magnolia Pictures | 2023 | 100 min | Not Rated
Directed by James Marsh

Literary genius Samuel Beckett lived a life of many parts: Parisian bon vivant, WWII Resistance fighter, Nobel Prize-winning playwright, philandering husband, recluse. But despite all the adulation that came his way, he was a man acutely aware of his own failings. Titled after Beckett’s famous ethos Dance first, think later, the film is a sweeping account of the life of this 20th-century icon.

Scarface (#1239)

Criterion | 1932 | 95 min | Not Rated
Directed by Howard Hawks & Richard Rosson

Blazing across the screen in a spray of bullets, the gangster-film sensation Scarface helped set the standard for the genre for decades to come. Swaggering, scary, and unexpectedly charming, Paul Muni gives an iconic portrayal of criminal sociopathy as Tony Camonte, the ruthless, machine-gun-toting mobster who rises through the ranks of a bootlegging empire atop an ever-increasing body count, but whose possessive relationship with his wild-child sister (Ann Dvorak) threatens to be his undoing. With rat-a-tat command of editing and dialogue, and his trademark panache, director Howard Hawks creates an unstoppable sense of dynamism while pushing on-screen violence to new heights of brutality.

The Invasion

Arrow | 2007 | 99 min | Rated PG-13
Directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel & James McTeigue

Since its first publication in 1955, Jack Finney’s classic sci-fi/horror novel The Body Snatchers has inspired numerous adaptations and created a whole subgenre of era-defining alien doppelgängers in books, film, and TV. 2007’s The Invasion was ahead of the curve, its eerily predictive shift toward a virus-like contagion more frighteningly resonant in a post-pandemic world. A space shuttle crashes to Earth carrying an alien organism. Soon people are changing, becoming detached and emotionless. People like CDC director Tucker Kaufman (Jeremy Northam) who is investigating the crash. Meanwhile, his ex-wife, psychiatrist Carol Bennell (Nicole Kidman), sees the same behavior in a friend of their son, and a patient claims that her husband is no longer her husband. As people all across Washington D.C. become infected and the insidious epidemic spreads, Carol must fight to protect herself and her son, who might just hold the key to stopping the escalating invasion. Produced by Joel Silver, and also starring Daniel Craig, Jeffrey Wright, and Veronica Cartwright, this edge-of-your-seat thriller makes its debut on 4K Blu-ray with a wealth of new and archival extras.

Maniac

Kino Lorber | 1934 | 55 min | Not Rated
Directed by Dwain Esper

So perverse that it continues to shock and offend viewers 90 years after its release, Dwain Esper’s Maniac is a deranged retelling of Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Black Cat” in the guise of an educational film on mental illness. This no-budget thriller by self-taught filmmakers has a wildly fragmented style. Its intrusive use of title scrolls, stock footage, and gratuitous nudity make it one of the first true underground films (with a gruesome wink at the eyeball-slicing scene of Un chien andalou). Maniac is presented here in a new 4K restoration, from the original camera negative and other 35mm elements preserved by the UCLA Film & Television Archive, and is presented in cooperation with Something Weird and the Sonney Amusement Enterprises Film Collection.

SPECIAL FEATURES

  • Four true crime short films by Dwain Esper and Louis Sonney: You Can’t Beat the Rap, The Last Hour of Killer Mears, The March of Crime, and The March of Crime (2nd Ed.)
  • Audio interview with Dwain Esper and Hildagarde Stadie (1982) courtesy of Mark Woods, Jr.

One, Two, Three

Kino Lorber | 1961 | 115 min | Not Rated
Directed by Billy Wilder

Hollywood great James Cagney (Yankee Doodle Dandy, Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye) gives one of the richest, funniest, most breathlessly paced performances of his career in this comedy that defrosts the Cold War with gales of laughter. C.R. “Mac” MacNamara (Cagney) is a top-ranking soda executive stationed in West Berlin who’s responsible for his boss’ daughter (Pamela Tiffin, The Hallelujah Trail) while he’s away on business. But when he learns that she’s gone and married a fierce young communist (Horst Buchholz, The Magnificent Seven) and that his boss will be arriving in town in 24 hours, Mac must transform the unwilling beatnik into a suitable son-in-law or risk losing his chance for advancement! Before you can say “one, two, three,” his plans have spun out of control and into an international incident that could infuriate the Russians, the Germans and, worst of all, his own suspicious wife. Legendary director Billy Wilder (Stalag 17, Witness for the Prosecution, The Apartment) directed and co-wrote this hilarious, fast-paced and lighthearted comedy with his twelve-time writing partner I.A.L. Diamond (Irma La Douce, The Fortune Cookie).

Roseland

Cohen Media Group | 1977 | 104 min | Not Rated
Directed by James Ivory

A trio of romantic – if bittersweet – tales set in New York’s esteemed Roseland Ballroom unfold in this touching drama. In “The Waltz,” recently widowed May (Teresa Wright) visits the Roseland to honor the memory of her late husband, and unexpectedly meets Stan (Lou Jacobi), who offers her an opportunity for happiness. “The Hustle” finds Russel (Christopher Walken) as a gigolo who keeps company with three women (Geraldine Chaplin, Joan Copeland and Helen Gallagher), but struggles to commit to any of them. Finally, in “The Peabody,” Rosa (Lilia Skala), an older Viennese woman, commits to winning a dance competition despite warnings that it could imperil not only her health, but her tenuous relationship with her dance partner as well. Expertly directed by James Ivory from Ruth Prawer Jhabvala’s moving screenplay, and produced by Ismail Merchant, Roseland brims with stories of not only searching for the glories of the past, but for hope in the future.

Topkapi

Kino Lorber | 1964 | 120 min | Not Rated
Directed by Jules Dassin

A skillful blend of romance, adventure and comedy from Jules Dassin, the legendary director of the classic heist film, Rififi. Fun-filled and suspenseful, it’s an incredibly ingenious affair and a considerable pleasure to watch. Trouble brews beneath the exotically curved towers of Istanbul when the equally exotic—and equally curved—Elizabeth Lipp (Melina Mercouri, Never on Sunday) recruits her former lover (Maximilian Schell, Judgment at Nuremberg) in a scheme to heist the pride of the city’s Topkapi museum: a jewel-encrusted dagger. But the “job” soon turns into a high-tension, high wire act, when the bumbling fall guy (Peter Ustinov, Death on the Nile) and other amateurs they’ve hired as help get more than they had bargained for. The stellar cast also includes Robert Morley (When Eight Bells Toll), Jess Hahn (The Night of the Following Day) and Akim Tamiroff (Touch of Evil). Ustinov won the Best Actor in a Supporting Role Oscar for his wonderful performance. Topkapi shimmers with hilarity, action and great performances!

Triumph Of The Spirit

Kino Lorber | 1989 | 120 min | Not Rated
Directed by Robert M. Young

Triumph of the Spirit is a powerfully moving boxing drama that takes place during WWII at the Auschwitz internment camp. Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man) stars as boxer Salamo Arouch, interned at the death camp with his family and friends (which include Edward James Olmos and Robert Loggia). He is forced to fight his fellow inmates to amuse the guards—the loser is sent to the gas chamber. Salamo’s prowess in the ring is both his salvation and his nightmare, as his hollow victories condemn others to death. Still he fights on, hoping he might somehow save his father…his friends…perhaps even his soul.
