WHY I CHOSE THOSE FIVE?

Having seen a third of these films, I can tell you that most of them are not Oscar-worthy. “Despicable Me 4,” “Kung Fu Panda 4,” and “Moana 2” are just your run-of-the-mill, big-budget sequels. But if there’s one sequel that is going to crack into the top 5, it’s “Inside Out 2.” The Pixar film was a juggernaut at the box office this year and mostly loved, tackling the subject of anxiety in teens. “The Garfield Movie,” “The Imaginary,” “Spellbound,” and “Thelma the Unicorn” were visually pleasing but lacked in the story department. However, “The Wild Robot” has to be the favorite to win the whole thing. Not only was the animation style absolutely killer, but the voice-acting, subject matter, and general overall reception were that of a winner. As far as the films I have yet to see, the three that feel most like Oscar picks are “Flow” (which I’m very excited to see), “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl” (because the Academy tends to love Aardman animation), and “Memoir Of A Snail.” Never count out wild cards like “Transformers One,” which feels too commercial for the Academy, and “Piece By Piece,” which tend to steer away from the LEGO fare.
