WHY I CHOSE THOSE FIVE?

As front-runners for the Best Picture category, any time “Dune: Part Two,” “Emilia Pérez,” and “Wicked” are on a shortlist, it’s easy to pick them for the nomination. A big fantasy epic, a Broadway play brought to life, and an international musical are all in line with what generally gets nominations. The last two picks are a bit murkier. “Maria” is a longshot because it has no precursors. But I find it hard to believe that Angelina Jolie will be the sole nominee for the film. My pick of “The Substance” is wishful thinking, although deserving of a nomination.

The experts at Gold Derby give the edge to “A Different Man,” which will surprise me, as it does not seem like the type of film the Academy elevates, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” which, as a horror/fantasy sequel, generally keeps films from getting nominated, and “Nosferatu,” which I find hard to believe the Academy will embrace it, although I hope they do. They have “Maria” at the bottom of their list, so if I were to swap only one of their picks, I would put “Nosferatu” in over” Maria.” Expect “The Apprentice” to miss out because the film was not well-received, and “Waltzing With Brando” is all but unknown. However, look at past years when films no one was talking about, like “Golda,” “Border,” or “Victoria & Abdul” were nominated, and suddenly it feels like we will see that get a nomination.
