WHY I CHOSE THOSE FIVE?
As with all the short film categories, these picks are all shots in the dark. The Annie Awards is the most significant precursor to pinpointing what might get a nomination, so going off that, “A Bear Named Wojtek,” “Beautiful Men,” “In the Shadow of the Cypress,” and “Wander to Wonder” are the four films I am picking out of that pool. “Yuck!” is the only other Annie Award nominee not on my list. However, the Gold Derby experts have it on their final five. Of the four I chose, “Wander to Wonder” is the favorite, as its list of accolades is the longest. Lastly, I picked “A Crab In The Pool” because its accolades are extensive and it looks interesting. I would highlight the short “Me,” despite lacking any precursors. The director, Don Hertzfeldt, is a two-time Oscar nominee. I’d also throw out the names of “Au Revoir Mon Monde” and “Percebes” because, at first glance, my gut tells me they’re the kind of short that generally gets nominated. Also, “The 21” has powerful subject matter and a back story, in which more than 70 artists from more than 24 countries were involved in making the short, which could elevate it and get it noticed by the voters.
