SNAKE EYES

Kino Lorber | 1998 | 98 min | Rated R
Directed by Brian De Palma

From its sensational opening shot to its atmospheric final showdown, Snake Eyes seethes with inventiveness and suspense! Nicolas Cage (Face/Off) and Gary Sinise (Reindeer Games) star in this acclaimed thriller directed by the master Brian De Palma (Dressed to Kill, Scarface, The Untouchables) that combines the glitter, glamour and bedlam of a heavyweight championship fight with pulse-pounding mystery and excitement. Cage plays Rick Santoro, a flamboyant Atlantic City police detective who’s come to watch the fight and cash in on the hectic betting action. Suddenly, gunfire cuts down a ringside government official, and 14,000 fans become 14,000 suspects. What eyewitnesses saw, what a casino-wide spycam network reveals and what a mysterious woman in white (Carla Gugino, Sin City) knows—all lead to a shattering truth Santoro does not want to believe. Featuring a tightly wound screenplay by David Koepp (Jurassic Park), music by the great Ryûichi Sakamoto (The Last Emperor) and a knockout cast filled by John Heard, Stan Shaw, Kevin Dunn, Michael Rispoli and Luis Guzmán.

Only they don’t use bullets—they capture the ferocious big game with strong ropes and cameras for zoos and circus attractions. It is an exciting business that pits man against beast. “Hatari” is Swahili for “danger”—and also the word for action, adventure, romance and broad comedy in this two-fisted Hawks effort that provides rousing entertainment for people of all ages! The fine cast also includes Hardy Krüger (A Bridge Too Far), Red Buttons (Sayonara) and beautiful Elsa Martinelli (The Belle Starr Story); with a script by longtime Hawks cohort Leigh Brackett (El Dorado, Rio Lobo), Oscar-nominated Technicolor cinematography by Russell Harlan (To Kill a Mockingbird) and the fabulous music of Henry Mancini (Arabesque).

Black Eye

Warner Bros. | 1974 | 98 min | Rated PG
Directed by Jack Arnold

Since he gave up his police badge, Shep Stone’s tried to make a go of it as a Private Investigator. A snoop job here, a shakedown there; work hasn’t exactly poured into the rundown bar where he occupies a stool keeping office hours. But one night, Stone walks into his apartment – and into a room where a murder victim is still warm….and the killer is lying in wait for Stone. Fred Williamson (From Dusk till Dawn) plays Stone, whose search for a murder weapon spins into a spider’s web of suspense linking a religious cult, a porno ring, a missing person and a notorious drug underground. Labeled “The Hammer” because of his gridiron style, the former pro-football star attacks the role of Stone with the same hard-hitting driving style. From a high-rent high-rise to a dilapidated amusement park, from alleyways to the beach, Stone sorts out clues, sidesteps increasing numbers of corpses and shows tough guys what tough is all about. He gets a couple of C-notes in advance for his trouble. He dishes out much more in excitement.

A Night Full Of Rain

Warner Bros. | 1978 | 104 min | Not Rated
Directed by Lina Wertmüller

Lizzy (Candice Bergen), a liberated American photographer, falls for narrow-minded journalist Paolo (Giancarlo Giannini). Then finds she can’t live with him or without him. Bergen (Murphy Brown) and Giannini (Seven Beauties) take both comic and fierce battle stations in this colorful excursion into the male/female combat zone. So what if the world, as we learn from the TV in Lizzy and Paolo’s luxurious apartment, is crashing around their ears; this is WAR! Writer/director Lina Wertmuller relied on spontaneity and improvisation in making… A Night Full of Rain, her first film in English. Giannini, star of Wertmuller’s groundbreaking Swept Away and Seven Beauties, was familiar with the technique, Bergen wasn’t. But it worked splendidly. Bergen gives one of the warmest and most characterful performances of her career, the Los Angeles Times hailed. When it rains, this film’s two stars pour it on!
