The year 2024 ends with a rather big month for physical media. Right out of the gate, one of my favorite movies of the year, “Alien: Romulus,” got a 4K Steelbook release and landed as my favorite artwork of the month. Also, with some stellar artwork were the latest Disney+ 4K Steelbook releases, with “Loki: Season Two,” “Ahsoka: Season One,” “Hawkeye: Season One,” and “The Mandalorian: Season Three,” all of which looked amazing. One personal achievement this year was diving deeper into the Vinegar Syndrome boutique label. December was chock-full of notable releases from them, highlighted with the 4K release of the Michael Crichton-based “Congo” from 1995.

Lionsgate Limited started their releases right before the end of the year, with “Apocalypse Now” and “The Conversation” receiving incredibly designed packaging for the two Francis Ford Coppola classics. Their 2025 slate begins with a bang, as 4K Steelbooks from Quentin Tarantino are right around the corner. Lionsgate also put out two 4K Steelbooks separate from their “Limited” line, with “Stir Of Echoes” and “Kickboxer” both getting lenticular Steelbooks. Shout Factory had a better-than-normal month of releases, with “The Gift,” “Ted,” “Riddick,” “The Holdovers,” and “Far And Away” all receiving 4K upgrades. They also released a 4K of the cult classic horror film “The Faculty,” which has always been a favorite of mine.

In that same vein, Kino Lorber put out a 4K of the Brian de Palma cult classic “Snake Eyes,” starring Nicolas Cage, one of my favorites. But at the pinnacle of releases I’ve been anticipating, Criterion released a 4K of “No Country For Old Men.” Typically, I wait for the Barnes & Noble 50% off sale to buy from Criterion, but I could not wait. Paramount put out a Limited Collector’s Edition of the Christopher Nolan film “Interstellar” that I couldn’t pass up. Decal Releasing upgraded their 2024 film “Immaculate” to 4K, upon which I double dipped. The Warner Archive Collection also released their first foray into the 4K format, with their release of “The Searchers.” Some big 2024 films also got physical media releases, including “Joker: Folie a Deux,” “Terrifier 3,” and “Transformers One” receiving a 4K Steelbook release. I also ordered some international Steelbooks for “Joker: Folie a Deux,” “Trap,” and “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” along with the 4K Disney releases that didn’t receive Steelbooks in the States of “Signs” and “The Sixth Sense,” both of which skimped on the artwork and landed as some of the worst of the month.
