Hosted by the beautiful and talented Nikki Glaser, the 82nd Golden Globe Awards took place at Beverly Hilton on Sunday night (at the same time as the final game of the NFL regular season, mind you), and it went over snag-free. After what was deemed a disaster by Jo Koy last year, Nikki nailed joke after joke, with bits like the “Wicked” meets “Conclave” musical number spoof and the midway scoreboard tally of who had been thanked the most in acceptance speeches, with God have zero and Mario Lopez having one. In addition to some great hosting, the presenters were equally enjoyable. Seth Rogen and Catherine O’Hara were the standouts with their presenting speech as they discussed their extensive made-up Canadian accolades.
The night’s winners included Brady Corbet garnering Best Director and his film “The Brutalist” pulling off Best Motion Picture – Drama. Adrien Brody would also win for his leading performance in the movie and mentioned the parallels between his mother’s journey to this country and the character he played in the film. “Emilia Pérez” was a big winner, scoring the final award, Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language, and Best Original Song for “El Mal.” Zoe Saldaña also won for her supporting performance in the film, and through a tearful acceptance speech, she expressed her gratitude and thanked her fellow nominees.
In a few surprises, Fernanda Torres won Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for her role in the international film “I’m Still Here.” She follows in her mother’s footsteps, who attended the Golden Globes twenty years prior. Sebastian Stan, who was a dual nominee, won for his performance in “A Different Man” and spoke out about the bias of disformities in Hollywood films. And, Demi Moore swooped in and won Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for her role in “The Substance,” beating out Mikey Madison for “Anora.” Also, “Flow” won for Best Motion Picture – Animated, and Kieran Culkin continued his sweep for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in “A Real Pain.”
On the television side, in true Golden Globe fashion, the films that won would sweep their categories. That included “Baby Reindeer” winning Best Television Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television and Jessica Gunning winning for her supporting role in the series. “Hacks” won Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy, with Jean Smart winning for her leading role. And, with a second season soon going into production, “Shōgun” won four awards, including three acting wins and the Best Television Series – Drama category. Colin Farrell won for his leading role in “The Penguin” and joked about only doing prosthetic roles from now on. And Jodie Foster won for her performance in “True Detective: Night Country,” as Sofía Vergara screamed about letting them win one for her role in “Griselda.” Overall, it was an enjoyable night, setting the stage for the rest of the approaching awards season.
