While more wildfires raged in Southern California on Thursday, January 26, Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott took the stage in Beverly Hill to announce the 97th Academy Award nominations. Postponed from their original date of Friday, January 17, because of the California wildfires, the presentation opened with a statement that this year’s Oscars will not only be honoring the best movies of the year but will also be honoring the brave firefighters and people affected by the devastation.
As Bowen and Rachel announced the nominees, it was clear which films the Academy adored, like “Wicked” and “Emilia Pérez,” and which films were sensationally ignored, like “Challengers.” Other films, like “Sing Sing” and “Nickel Boys,” had a decent showing, while “The Substance” and “Nosferatu” made history by ending the Academy’s streak of not elevating horror films. One overperformer was the foreign title “I’m Still Here,” which saw three nominations, including Best Actress in a Leading Role and Best Picture. Another underperformer was “Dune: Part Two,” which, at one point, had been in contention for Best Director but slowly fell out of favor as it missed tech categories like Film Editing. I had hoped that Margaret Qualley and the film “Civil War” could garner some nominations, but I had to settle for “Alien: Romulus” popping up in the Visual Effects category.
On Sunday, March 2, the Oscars will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, hosted by Conan O’Brien.
