Conan O’Brien hosted the 97th Academy Awards on March 2, ushering in the official end of the awards season. With the most of head of steam rolling into the night, “Anora” was predicted to take home the Best Picture prize, but the surprise came at just how many awards the film won. Not only did it take the top prize, but Sean Baker won for Best Directing, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Editing. Mikey Madison would also upset Demi Moore by winning Best Actress in a Leading Role.
There were a few surprises throughout the night, like “Flow” beating “The Wild Robot” in Best Animated Feature and “I’m Still Here” winning instead of “Emilia Pérez.” Although the ceremony abandoned the performances of the nominated songs, there was plenty of singing through the night, with a tribute to some of the Jamed Bond themes throughout the years, with singers like Doja Cat and Raye. Queen Latifah paid tribute to the late Quincy Jones with a song and dance number. And to open the show, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo performed some of the songs from “Wicked.” Conan O’ Brien also had a musical number joking about not going over time, even though the ceremony pressed longer than recent memory.
The acceptance speeches from Zoe Saldaña and Adrien Brody were extraordinary, as they excluded their passion. Paul Tazewell made history as the first black man to win in Costume Design and “Flow” put Latvia on the Oscars map, as the first film of that country to win the award. “The Brutalist,” “Dune: Part Two,” and “Wicked” shared many of the technical awards. Some of the speeches went political, as the directors of “No Other Land” focused on the Israel-Palestine conflict, Adrien Brody asked for everyone to fight against hate, Mikey Madison shouted out the sex workers she’s come to know, and Sean Baker pleaded with audiences to see movie in theaters and keep independent cinema alive. Overall, it was a joyous night with everyone looking their best and what more could you ask for?
