There was nothing quite as outrageous as Hong Kong cinema in the 1980s. From horrific black magic to spellbindingly choreographed action and dark and lurid stories of revenge, Hong Kong filmmakers created genre cinema that broke new ground. Amongst the companies producing some of the craziest films was Golden Harvest. Legendary for their martial arts epics, Golden Harvest stormed full force into every corner of genre filmmaking, and presented here are two of their most memorable and audacious works.
DEVIL FETUS:
A young woman purchases a suspiciously phallic-looking antique vase from a street auction only to soon become the target of a lustful demonic spirit. When her husband discovers her fornicating with the evil entity, he destroys the vase, leading to his and his wife’s grotesque deaths. Fearing that the entity may have impregnated the recently deceased woman with a demonic fetus, a priest seals off the evil spirit in the woman’s bedroom so as not to be disturbed. However, several years later, the young woman’s family accidentally breaks the seal, unleashing a supernatural force upon their household. As the family attempts to battle this malicious entity, they must find the priest who originally trapped the demon in order for him to return and finish the job once and for all.
Given a “Category III” rating upon its initial release, thanks to its unrelenting feast of on-screen grotesqueries, DEVIL FETUS’ home video history has been marred by releases that were either cropped from its original scope framing or heavily censored. Jumping from a stylish Hong Kong supernatural thriller to an over-the-top gore and action spectacle featuring intricate wire-work, astonishing visual effects, maggot-covered corpses, sexually perverse creatures, and a multitude of inventive death sequences, Vinegar Syndrome is proud to present this unforgettable Hong Kong horror on Blu-ray for the first time, completely uncut and in its original aspect ratio, unseen since its theatrical release!
HER VENGEANCE:
Ying is a mild-mannered hostess at a local nightclub where, one night, she accidentally insults a group of drunken thugs. While returning home later that night, Ying is attacked by the drunkards and is viciously beaten and assaulted. Seeking retribution, Ying enlists the help of a former Triad member who is now confined to a wheelchair. Although reluctant to help in her pursuit of vengeance, he offers Ying a job at his bar to help her get a fresh start. However, soon after, she encounters one of her attackers and, seizing the moment, kills him. With blood now on her hands, Ying is set on a path of violence that she can no longer walk away from, leaving those in her life caught up in the bloodshed.
With its feet planted firmly in the world of exploitation cinema, HER VENGEANCE plays as an even more extreme version of I Spit on Your Grave, filtered through an action movie structure. Directed by one of Hong Kong’s most notorious filmmakers, Ngai Choi Lam (Riki-Oh: Story of Ricky, The Seventh Curse), HER VENGEANCE is a brutal and unflinching study of a woman hell-bent on revenge. Initially released with a “Category III” rating due to its shocking depictions of violence and assault, the film was subsequently re-edited into a less graphic “Category IIb” version intended for a wider release. Vinegar Syndrome is proud to present this unflinching thriller in two of its most complete versions: the original CAT III version, featuring all of its shocking sex and violence, as well as the more commonly seen CAT IIb version, which tames the brutality while adding more story and character development not present in the CAT III version.

Sex and violence proved a winning combination, and giallo directors took notice as the 1970s progressed. Before the genre would splinter into either the 80s tropes of slasher adjacent thrillers or heavy sex with a dose of mystery & violence, filmmakers in the 70s tried to evenly balance these two equally marketable subjects by creating films that were capable of selling titillation without skimping on the bloodshed.
This limited edition box set (designed by Alessa Kreger) is limited to 5,000 units and is only available on our website and at select indie retailers. Absolutely no major retailers will be stocking them.
RINGS OF FEAR
Hard-boiled Inspector Gianni Di Salvo has been brought in to solve the murder of a schoolgirl, found nude and savagely tortured. As he looks into the girl’s life, hoping to find a clue as to why someone sought to snuff her out, his investigation takes him to an exclusive, all-girl prep school which the teenage victim attended. After becoming aware of her involvement with a trio of pupils who call themselves “The Inseparables,” Di Salvo is convinced that the group is aware of some secret that led to their friend’s killing. But when more victims are found slaughtered, the detective is in a race against time to unmask the murderer before it’s too late.
Expertly blending an in-your-face trashiness with a stylish and well-developed murder mystery, prolific TV director Alberto Negrin’s RINGS OF FEAR (Enigma Rosso) is often considered a spiritual sequel to the earlier giallo classic, What Have You Done to Solange? by again casting Italian heavy Fabio Testi (The Heroin Busters) at the center of a series of schoolgirl killings. Co-starring Christine Kaufmann (Murders in the Rue Morgue), Ivan Desny (The Marriage of Maria Braun), along with Jack Taylor (Pieces), and Helga Liné (Horror Express), Vinegar Syndrome presents this deliriously perverse fan favorite on Blu-ray, exclusively scanned and restored in 2K from the best-surviving film elements and featuring an exclusive array of new interviews with cast and crew.
REFLECTIONS IN BLACK
Countess Orselmo hides her lust for women from most of those closest to her, but that does not stop her from taking a bevy of beautiful female companions to her bed. But when some of her favorite conquests are discovered dead, slashed to ribbons with a razor, the Countess finds herself embroiled in a sinister mystery of which her illicit affairs are at the very center. Will she be next on the killer’s target list, or does the assailant have another and even more shocking motive for the violence?
Amongst the more obscure efforts to emerge from the genre’s mid-70s sex and prostitute-themed narrative trend, character-actor turned-director Tano Cimarosa’s sole giallo, REFLECTIONS IN BLACK (Il vizio ha le calze nere) offers twist-heavy plotting and a cast of major names in Italian genre cinema, including John Richardson (Black Sunday), Dagmar Lassander (Hatchet for the Honeymoon), and Giacomo Rossi Stuart (The Bloodsucker Leads the Dance). Virtually unseen since the video era, Vinegar Syndrome is proud to bring the original Italian theatrical cut of this genre rarity to Blu-ray, newly restored in 2K from the only known film elements and presented in its original scope framing, alongside brand new bonus features.
A.A.A. MASSEUSE, GOOD-LOOKING, OFFERS HER SERVICES
Christina cannot stand her overbearing and oppressive home life. After deciding she needs to make it on her own, she rents an apartment but quickly discovers that to enjoy her freedom and independence, she’ll need to earn a steady income. Taking advantage of her voluptuous body, she begins working as a call girl under the “protection” of a rough pimp named Oskar. But when some of her clients start turning up dead with their throats slashed, Christina realizes that a madman is on the loose and is following her carnal activities in order to find a victim pool.
An early example of a giallo that leaned as heavily on sex and nudity as it did on more traditional “whodunit” plotting, prolific Western director Demofilo Fidani’s (Django and Sartana Are Coming… It’s the End) A.A.A. MASSEUSE, GOOD-LOOKING, OFFERS HER SERVICES (A.A.A. Massaggiatrice bella presenza offresi…) personifies the direction the genre would soon head, emphasizing the casting of beautiful female leads willing to do plentiful nude scenes, here including Paola Senatore (Images in a Convent) and Simonetta Vitelli (Frankenstein’s Castle of Freaks). Never released in any territory outside of Italy and never dubbed into English, Vinegar Syndrome is pleased to present this underseen shocker on Blu-ray, newly restored in 2K from its camera negative and offering an extensive array of new interviews with cast and crew.

Welcome Vinegar Syndrome Labs (VSL) to the VS Sub-Label family! As with each of our sub-labels we are hoping to expand and defy expectations with the diversity of films we restore and release. As the name implies, VSL will serve as a kind of testing area for releasing genres and eras of film that one might not immediately expect to come from VS. The ultimate objective of VSL will be to see if these types of films will find an audience, and if so, pursue and release more of them…and even if not, still serve as a means of restoring more of the weird, rare, and unusual movies you might not expect from Vinegar Syndrome.

Lauded American architect Stourley Kracklite has been invited to Rome to supervise the construction of a new building being modeled after the work of famed 18th-century builder Etienne-Louis Boullée, whose structures have served as Kracklite’s primary source of creative inspiration. Accompanied on his trip by his newly pregnant wife Louisa, Kracklite soon begins suffering from stomach pains, being constantly undermined by his subordinates, a possible affair blossoming between his wife and a work rival, and an obsession with the stomach of Caesar Augustus. His life continues down a path of obsession and self-destruction while wandering through the beautiful architecture and atmosphere of both ancient and modern Rome.
Starring acclaimed six-time Emmy® nominee Brian Dennehy (First Blood, Looking for Mr. Goodbar) in one of his most celebrated performances, filmmaker Peter Greenaway’s (Drowning by Numbers) 1987 Cannes Film Festival Palme d’Or nominated THE BELLY OF AN ARCHITECT is an intense study of self-destruction brought to a fever pitch. Taking its name from the Lumière Brothers invention of the same name, Cinématographe is a new sub-label from Vinegar Syndrome that seeks to fill gaps in the canon of American cinema. Offering a mix of auteur driven studio films produced during the New Hollywood era of the late 1960s and 70s all the way through the indie boom of the 1980s and 90s, Cinématographe will explore the wide breadth of American moviemaking, spanning numerous genres and scales of production. Curated and produced by Vinegar Syndrome’s Justin LaLiberty, each limited edition release will be housed in a specially designed, cloth-bound, media book with embossed foil titles and custom molded disc trays accompanied by a slipcase featuring newly commissioned art and an individually numbered J-card.

Barney Cashman (Alan Arkin, The In-Laws), a middle-aged seafood restaurant owner in an unhappy marriage, realizes that his mother’s apartment will be vacant one afternoon each week, spurring numerous raucous attempts at seduction. In his consistently comedic quest to be a “red hot lover”, Cashman makes various discoveries about himself and, subsequently, the woman he pledged fidelity to.
Based on revered American playwright Neil Simon’s (The Odd Couple, Barefoot In the Park) play of the same name, LAST OF THE RED HOT LOVERS was adapted for the screen by Simon himself and directed by frequent stage and screen collaborator Gene Saks (The Odd Couple, play and film). Featuring a delightfully manic lead performance by Arkin and a gifted ensemble cast including Sally Kellerman (MAS*H), Paula Prentiss (The Stepford Wives) and Renée Taylor (A New Leaf), Cinématographe is proud to present this often overlooked entry in the careers of Neil Simon, Gene Saks and Alan Arkin in a new 4K restoration from its original camera negative, making its world blu-ray debut!

Degausser Video was created by several of the devious minds behind VS, which will bring to Blu-ray deluxe editions of both canonical and under-seen shot on video (SOV) genre cinema, in addition to work shot on film, but edited on tape, wherein the original film materials are believed to be lost or destroyed. Additionally, each title released by Degausser will be made available in an ultra limited “new” VHS edition, fitted in a custom designed hard shell light box.

On the gritty streets of Mexico City, Commander Quiroga (Fernando Almada, Grave Robbers) and his partner Miranda (Julio Rasec, Mark of the Killer) more than have their hands full. Between firefights with drug traffickers and the chronic minibus stickups that the public is usually too afraid to report, there’s now a demented rapist/murderer, Raúl (Ángel Sancho), who uses an unusual jeweler’s tool to stab his random victims. A local radio show host (Nora Terrero, Don’t Panic) is eager to criticize the police’s ineffective actions against crime and coaxes Quiroga onto her show for a chance to defend the police. As the police and other criminals close in on Raúl, he begins to unravel and turn his focus onto the people who are hunting him down.
Mexsploitation stalwart Fernando Almada stars in this harsh urban cop action/slasher, shot on film and finished on videotape, an early entry in the incredibly prolific Mexican “videohome” phenomenon. With a bleak tone influenced by Clint Eastwood’s Dirty Harry films and a twisted killer obsessed with sin and the Bible (played by the director under his Sancho pseudonym), Degausser Video is proud to present 38 ESPECIAL, an incredibly unique offering from Mexican crime cinema, newly transferred and restored from its original master tape.

Career Bed + Sex By Advertisement

DPIX-005 CASE
1968 | 161 min (combined) | 1.37:1 | English DTS-HD MA 1.0
Directed by Joel Reed
Starring: Jennifer Welles, Georgina Spelvin
Presented in partnership with Something Weird Video…
From nudies to roughies to ultra weird regional curiosities, the sexploitation world welcomed any filmmaker working in any genre, so long as the limits of nudity and sex on screen were pushed as far as they could go – but never all the way. DISTRIBPIX, one of the legendary names in the genre (and whose extensive library will be the backbone of this line), will offer single, double, and even triple feature Blu-rays highlighting works from every corner and crevice of softcore smut, from the dawn of nudie cuties to the all-but-hard 70s, with plentiful lost and never on disc films along the way.
This special limited edition Blu-ray comes with a spot gloss hard slipcase + slipcover combo (designed by Richard Hilliard), includes a 40-page perfect bound book, and is limited to 2,500 units. It is only available on our website and at select indie retailers. Absolutely no major retailers will be stocking them.
A quintessential exploitation filmmaker, the late Joel M. Reed’s filmography traversed just about every corner of genre filmmaking, from ultra-gory horror with BLOODSUCKING FREAKS to oddball action with THE G.I. EXECUTIONER. But at the start of his career, like so many working in B-movies, Reed helmed a set of sexploitation films. However, not content to simply offer T&A with a flimsy storyline, Reed instead created what rank as two of the most jaw dropping and demented such efforts ever produced, both of which at last come to Blu-ray, newly scanned and restored in 4K from their 35mm camera negatives from Distribpix + Something Weird.
In Reed’s electric debut, CAREER BED, Jennifer Welles (Scorpio 70) stars as Susan, an impressionable young woman on the hard road to cinema stardom. Under the brutal and cruel pressure of her manipulative and jealous mother, Susan’s life quickly becomes overtaken with casting couches, lecherous producers, lesbian agents, and general money making scams.
Chock full of jaw droppingly acidic dialogue, delivered through the powerhouse performances of Welles and one-time-player Honey Hunter as Susan’s scheming mother, CAREER BED plays like an unhinged mix of underground theatre and classical Hollywood melodrama.
Reed’s no-less-strange sophomore feature, SEX BY ADVERTISEMENT, explores the weird world of erotic newspaper ads in a mondo-film styled pastiche. Hosted by Dr. Joanne Ridgefield (soon-to-be-superstar Georgina Spelvin in one of her earliest roles), all manners of perversity are uncovered, from hippie love-ins, violent sadists, transvestites, dirty photographers, and much more. Co-starring Warhol superstar Geri Miller (Trash, High Rise), this wild and wacky ride effortlessly manages to shock from beginning to end.

Although largely forgotten today, director Alan Colberg was a prolific journeyman filmmaker whose career in sexploitation and hardcore features offered drive-in styled films which were as fun as they were effortlessly erotic. Colberg, who often collaborated with his wife Laurie, transitioned to hardcore later than many of his peers, but did so in style with this set of John Holmes starring productions, produced by Chris Warfield (Hot Lunch, Champagne For Breakfast). Peekarama proudly brings this tantalizing two-fer to Blu-ray, scanned and restored in 2K from their 35mm original camera negatives.
In ALL NIGHT LONG, superstuds John (John Holmes) and Rick (Rick Lutze) have been selected by The Health and Home Society to compete for the coveted Golden Rod Award; an honor bestowed to the man who can satisfy the greatest number of women over the course of a single night. From arthouse to Canuxploitation, Canadian International Pictures (CIP) is devoted to resurrecting vital, distinctive, and overlooked triumphs of Canadian cinema. This label is focused on the country’s original cinematic boom years – spanning the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s – occasionally venturing past that period (and the country’s borders) to highlight the films of Canada’s most inspired actors and filmmakers. Vinegar Syndrome’s sister company, OCN Distribution, is thrilled to be representing CIP’s brand new line of home video releases!

These girls do exactly what you think they do!
During a winter road trip, young couple Cliff (Schitt’s Creek’s Eugene Levy) and Gloria (Black Christmas’ Andrea Martin) get lost and make an unplanned stop in Farnhamville, Ontario, a snowy small town known as “The Friendly City.” When they hear the legend of three local women with a history of murdering men, they playfully investigate. But to their horror, it seems the killers are still active, police and other locals are complicit, and they’re all feasting on the victims. When the cannibals develop an appetite for Cliff and Gloria, they race to get on the road – before they get on the menu.
A decade before achieving blockbuster status with Ghostbusters, director Ivan Reitman put himself on the map with this more unsettling stab at horror comedy featuring future icons (and SCTV stars) Levy and Martin. Drawing inspiration from the Manson family and other shocking, drug-fueled horrors of the hippie era, Cannibal Girls is a gruesome Canuxploitation classic that set the stage for the provocative horror films – including Shivers, Rabid, and the Ilsa series – Reitman went on to produce at Cinépix. The film also made a splash in the U.S. where American International Pictures added a gimmick worthy of William Castle: a “warning bell” preparing viewers for “scenes of an especially erotic or gruesome nature.”

Since 2004, Bleeding Skull has explored otherworldly cinema through reviews, books, and home video releases. We shine a light on independent genre films that have flown under the radar but deserve to be seen by all. Fangoria has called Bleeding Skull “The go-to encyclopedia for trash, bizarre, and shot-on-video cinema,” while Vice referred to it as “like a fever dream glimpse into parallel worlds”. Shot on Super 8 film and edited on decaying VHS tapes in Chicago, the experimental horror movies of late musician and filmmaker J.T. IV (aka John Henry Timmis IV) feel like an unholy alliance between David Bowie and Charles Manson. CANNIBAL ORGY AND THE FILMS OF J.T. IV is an historical archive that collects Timmis’s collage-like films for the first time on home video. This includes CANNIBAL ORGY—a Satanic panic ode to BLOOD FEAST, Lucio Fulci, and stoned glam rock. It does not include THE CURE FOR INSOMNIA, Timmis’s 85-hour movie that holds the Guinness World Record for the longest film ever made. Although he mainly identified as straight, J.T. IV was refreshingly open about his same-sex relationships in his autobiography FROM THE INSIDE, making these works exciting discoveries in the realm of alternative and underground cinema.

One Sunday in November, Mila (Charo Santos) announces to her father Dadang (Vic Silayan), a retired police officer, that she is pregnant, asking for permission to marry her co-worker Noel (Jay Ilangan). The noose further tightens as Dadong’s unreasonable expectations for a dowry are not met and he exhibits an increasingly authoritarian streak. The couple marries and soon, Mila’s father begins a game of exclusion and manipulation in the hopes of reasserting control over his kin.
Based on the true crime reportage “The House on Zapote Street” penned by Nick Joaquin, Mike De Leon’s Kisapmata, beautifully restored in 4K by L’Immagine Ritrovata, is a stunning example of psychological horror; a film that meticulously tighten the noose around its characters’ neck until the outcome feels inevitable — culminating in a brutal, unflinching portrait of the horrors of patriarchy at its most pathological. Voted the 3rd Best Filipino Film Of All Time by the Pinoy Rebyu (SFFR), it stands as one of Mike De Leon’s most unsettling and politically resonant films.

Saturn’s Core Audio & Video is a New Jersey based home video label devoted to releasing underground oddities and shot on video cinema on VHS, and now, blu-ray discs! In partnership with OCN Distribution, Saturn’s Core will exhume forgotten or under-seen genre cinema from the 80s and 90s, with an emphasis on SOV horror features. Saturn’s Core is proud to present the collaborative works of two monumental female artists: Emmy Award-winning filmmaker and artist Merrill Aldighieri and provocative musician and poet, No Wave icon, and Cinema of Transgression firebrand Lydia Lunch (Fingered, Vortex, Mondo New York). Combining two essential video features, a wealth of rare archival material, and an exclusive new career spanning interview with Lydia, this crucial anthology presents a shocking snapshot into the oeuvre of one of the most important, impactful, and insurgent female voices in history.
In The Gun Is Loaded (1989), Lydia Lunch delivers a brutally frank manifesto in a journey through the heart of contemporary 1980s American darkness. Set against a series of New York City locales, Lydia’s singular brand of poetic nihilism is underscored by footage of bottom rung Americana; as race car crowds, dead end streets, and meat packing plants seamlessly illustrate her ruthless examination of “the American dream turned mean”. Featuring a cacophonous and deranged score by J. G. Thirlwell aka Foetus, Lydia brazenly disseminates her unresolved rage, exhilarating profanity, and timeless critiques of Reagan era politics in this ‘80s underground video classic.
In Road Rant: A Week on the Road with Lydia Lunch (2012), the X-rated cartoon animations of director Merrill Aldighieri add a comical edge to this otherwise intense Lydia Lunch tour documentary. Highlights from five concerts are accompanied by a live music score performed by composer Joe Budenholzer (Backworld) & horn player Terry Edwards (The Higsons) during their travels to Marseille, Lyon, Evreux, & Nantes amidst Lydia’s promotional tour for the French release of her book Paradoxia: A Predator’s Diary.

A sharp-eyed satire set on a sugar plantation on an Indonesian island in the final years of the Dutch colonial era, Ena Sendijarević’s (Take Me Somewhere Nice) second feature is a potent reminder that European colonialism did not come to a tidy ending in the innumerable countries it affected (to say nothing of the neocolonialism still impacting much of the globe). Instead, Sweet Dreams provides compelling evidence of the mess these wider historical forces make in the lives of the characters within the volatile microcosm the director portrays so vividly.
For the family and business led by the imperious patriarch Jan (Hans Dagelet), the rot had clearly set in long before these events. That said, Jan isn’t around to see the changes to come, what with his sudden death after one of his nightly visits to the room of Siti (Hayati Azis), his Indonesian housekeeper. With the disorder in the household further compounded by a workers’ protest, his widow Agathe (Locarno winner Renée Soutendijk) demands the return from Europe of Jan’s pompous son Cornelius (Florian Myjer) and heavily pregnant daughter-in-law Josefin (Lisa Zweerman). When they all learn of Jan’s decision to bequeath his estate to his son with Siti, the ensuing power struggles add a further degree of turbulence.
Realizing the promise she displayed in her first feature Take Me Somewhere Nice, Sendijarević delivers a film that’s remarkable for its ruthless intelligence, visual flair, and astute take on the ways personal relationships can be poisoned by the systems and structures in which we operate.
Dutch submission for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film, 2024.

A charming, vulgar, reimagining of Pier Paolo Pasolini’s Teorema:
A refugee emerges from a suitcase on the bank of the Thames—one of several identical men appearing across the city. Disguised as a homeless man, he infiltrates an upper-class household by befriending the maid, who claims he is her nephew. The family then hires him as a live-in servant. As in Teorema, the Visitor engages intimately with each family member – the encounters portrayed through explicit scenes. These interactions spark profound sexual and spiritual transformations within the household.
