May marked a notable return for Walt Disney to the physical media scene—its most significant presence since partnering with Sony for distribution. The studio rolled out 4K editions of Lilo & Stitch, Captain America: Brave New World, and Kingdom of Heaven, with the latter two receiving sleek SteelBook editions. As usual, Lionsgate led the pack with a strong slate, including The Crazies, Kick-Ass, Law Abiding Citizen, and May, the latest title in their Vestron Video Collector’s Series. After going quiet since November 2023, it was refreshing to see Vestron back in action—and with more titles on the horizon.

When it comes to artwork, my top picks for May were easily Arrow Video’s Friday the 13th 4Ks. Both Jason Goes to Hell and Jason X followed the aesthetic style of Arrow’s previous release of the 2009 reboot, showcasing Jason Voorhees’ mask with a dramatic rip running down the center. On the flip side, my least favorite artwork of the month belonged to the international SteelBook of Companion—a flat pink design that didn’t do much for me. Still, since Companion is one of my favorite films of the year so far and there wasn’t a U.S. SteelBook available, I picked it up anyway.

Another label making a quiet comeback was Paramount Presents, which hadn’t released anything since September 2024. They returned this month with Better Man, which stood out as the first new release in the line—most of their catalog has focused on classic titles. Kino Lorber kept their comedy streak alive, dropping 4K editions of Kingpin and Wayne’s World 2, along with a Blu-ray release of the 2023 film Bottoms. A24 also contributed with their Digipack release of Queer (2024), starring Daniel Craig. Meanwhile, Shout Factory delivered a solid mix: a 25th Anniversary Edition of What Lies Beneath and a 4K SteelBook for Wanted. One of the few 2025 titles I picked up this month was the 4K SteelBook of Mickey 17—a release I’ve been excited about.

Looking ahead, my most anticipated release for June is the 4K SteelBook box set of Sean Connery’s James Bond films. I’m a big fan of these steel case box sets, especially the ones with padded dividers between each individual SteelBook. I really hope they continue this format with box sets for each Bond actor—Daniel Craig, Pierce Brosnan, Roger Moore, and so on. Another must-have for me is Criterion’s upcoming release of William Friedkin’s Sorcerer.

I’ve also been loving how many boutique labels are giving comedies some well-deserved attention. Kino Lorber has Road Trip and Mouse Hunt lined up, and Shout Factory is releasing Bring It On through their Shout Select line. I haven’t seen Dark City yet, but Arrow Video’s release looks excellent, and Decal’s 4K SteelBook for Longlegs is another eye-catching addition.
